Military Looking to Get Into The Gemology Space

As per the header, I'm an active duty enlisted member of the US Army who has been wanting to pursue a career in the field of precious stones. I don't have the most free time but enough I feel I could make education work at the moment. Additionally moving around isn't an option as I'm conjoined at uncle sams hip. I've been looking around at the GIAs graduate gemology certificated and have a few questions.

The big one involves some things I've heard. Do some of the labs and/or interactions require I come to a campus?

Additionally, how flexible are the instructors and courses? Would I be able to have some leeway in the event I get overtly busy?

I took to asking on here before hitting up the GIA representatives to get a more level answer and opinions, thanks.
