Beyond Hate: An analysis of Punjab Kings' 2026 Season

The current doom and gloom makes me feel that a lot of the audience and fans of this team are children who have never seen bad teams. As someone who has seen Toronto Maple Leafs fail since 2008, I can assure you this team is alright.

Yes, losing 6 in row after an amazing start has to be one of the biggest implosions in sports....probably rivalling the Toronto Maple Leafs (oh God those memories), but rather than crying and hating and being toxic like stereotypical fans from a subcontinent country (which shall not be named), lets act a bit different. You don't like fans of toxic teams, so don't be one.

Lets start off with what the blueprint of IPL winning teams are: IPL winning teams (Indians and Superkings) don't win IPL year after year by getting the best superstar. They do it because they scout domestic talent and keep them in the org before they become household names. Think if Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Panya, etc etc.

The Good

Punjab's opening pair has been solid. We have Prabhsimran and Arya and they have been fantastic. This is a prime example of scouting local talent. Supplementing them is Connolly who has been fantastic as well. Iyer comes later on to stabilize the team. I know Iyer has performed badly in the recent matches we have lost, but overall his numbers are okay this IPL.

Our bowling has seen good bowling from Vyshank. He has utilized ball variation really well, and since I didn't follow IPL after1st season until last year, I am not sure why he didn't have other teams chasing him. Nevertheless, he is someone we should keep long term.

The BAD

Arshdeep's immaturity. If I was management, I would straight up tell him that IF you DARE to post this bs social media trash WHILE the tournament is going on, we will be terminating your contract IMMEDIATELY due to breach of conduct and we will make sure you have to sit out the entire tournament without pay. This guy is the prime example of bad behavior we see in Brampton and tell our kids to never replicate. His entitlement and racism is on a different level and he talks as if he wouldn't be washing toilets at a Tim Horton's had his luck not shined at the right time. This year Arshdeep has completely turned me from a fan to a borderline hater....but since he is young, I will reserve my judgment. (Note: Some fans were willing to hate and villainize comedian influencers over this buffoon who is SUPPOSED to be a professional).

Shashank Singh. I never want to see him in the playing XI ever again. At 33, he is a depreciating asset. At the best, he makes 30 runs. At his worst, he costs us the game. Absolutely horrendous fielding and he has shown no improvement whatsoever. There is very little reason we should be even have him in the extras. I would release this liability the first chance I get and try to get a younger talent.

Yuzvendra Chahal: Unlike Shashank, Yuzi has some good wicket taking ability and I don't hate the man despite his questionable life choices, but his cost makes it hard to justify keeping him in the team. He leaks out a lot of runs and I would use younger bowlers like Harpreet Brar. He is too expensive for what he brings on the table....which is JUST spin bowling, in a tournament that is batting heavy.

Australian love: This is not Australian Premier League, not is this Australia A squad. I love me the spirit that Ponting has brought BUT, he needs to STOP with bringing Australians in the team unless they are capped International stars. The point of bringing foreign players is to plug in the gap that local talent cannot compensate for. We have 0 reason to bring in mediocre Australian talent like Xavier Bartlett or Ben Dwarshuis. Absolutely trash. The management needs to make it VERY clear to Ponting that we appreciate what he brings to the table, but he is to ONLY get Australian players with proven record because they are taking away a foreign player slot which can be used to get proven international players.

Marco Jansen: He has had a really bad IPL. However, even good players have rough patches. His height, left arm angle, and lower order explosiveness is a great combo to have and I am willing to overlook this IPL. Heck, even Matthews has a shitty NHL season with below 40 goals (and that dude is a first overall pick!)

Missing wicketkeeper: Prabhsimran has only got fatter. While he has played well, I am really questioning his fitness and he should NOT be a wicket-keeper. A wicketkeeper needs to be someone with international experience that can provide insight and assist Shreyas with captaincy decisions. They need agility, and I doubt Prabhsimran has that with all the weight he has gained in the off-season.

Moving forward:

Punjab needs to scout for some good bowling. I have liked Ashok Sharma for his pace, Gurnoor for his Jansen-like height, and Auqib Nabi for his swing. While I love me some pace, Nabi has taken 60 wickets in 10 matches in Ranji and has a crazy 12.56 average. As a cheap option, even Arjun Tendulkar is okay. However, he isn't a wicket taker and generally tends to be utilized to reign in runs. He has become a meme but his List A and international bowling isn't bad.

Pieces to add should be good foreign wicketkeeper, and decent allarounders. We need to shed some cap space from Yuzi, and other Australians.

With love,
A Canadian fan
