Why does Nordic discourse so often become ‘Sweden and [other Nordic country]’ instead of ‘these countries and each other’?
I might be way off, but I’ve noticed that when people talk about relationships between the Nordic countries, Sweden seems to be involved surprisingly often.
You hear a lot about Sweden–Finland through hockey and their sports rivalry, Sweden’s lust to be better than Norway at winter sports, Sweden–Denmark through football, history and the old rivalry between the two countries, etc. There seems to be a whole bunch of these Sweden–X dynamics that get talked about quite a lot.
But I feel like I hear much less about the equivalent relationships between the other Nordic countries. For those of you from Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland: how do you view your relationships with the other Nordic countries, excluding Sweden?
