I’ve always been fascinated by the 1973 BBC adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s A Little Princess. While later versions are widely available, this six-part serial has become surprisingly difficult to see. That is a shame, because Deborah Makepeace gives a sensitive and memorable performance as Sara Crewe, and the production possesses the intimate, slightly haunting atmosphere characteristic of classic BBC period dramas.
For this fan-made poster, I took inspiration from the poster for Midsommar, particularly its extreme close-up composition and the way a single expression becomes the emotional focus of the entire design. Sara’s face reflects the loneliness and quiet resilience at the heart of the story.
I first became interested in this adaptation after discovering a few images and scattered references to it online. The more I learned about it, the stranger it seemed that an entire BBC dramatization of such a beloved novel could virtually disappear. Productions like this deserve to be seen again—not only by those who remember their original broadcasts, but also by new viewers discovering A Little Princess for the first time.
