gen 2 b58 smelling coolant
*UPDATE Mechanic Took off downpipe and noticed the turbo is internally leaking coolant, Turbine was blue/green, Premature failure at 36k miles
I Was getting low coolant way before i even had the down pipe installed, being catless just made the problem more noticeable.
2021 540i Gen 2 b58 36k miles, Got a low coolant few months ago been topping off the expansion tank every other month cause it kept going way below the min mark. Few weeks later i got Drive train malfunction for the first time ever on this car, CODES were for wastegate actuator stuck closed position, wastegate short circuit positive to B+ ground. Had An Indy shop Pressure test coolant system but no external leaks were found, Only some dried coolant around the turbo coolant lines near the wastegate actuator & they changed those last week along with a new wastegate actuator motor covered by my extended warranty. I do smell coolant while driving as well. Mainly smells like raw gas from bein catless but a hint of coolant as well. The smoke goes away in like 2 minutes , it lessens. Happens only after i drive and stop to go to 711 or something then i turn it back on and this happens. 68 outside atm. This was when car was at temp as well. Cold starts are not like this but a smaller amount. Hope this post will help me & others in the future.
