The coil claims another (Peter Fehervari Appreciation Post)

Spoilers obviously.

So I've been working my way through the black library for quite but I hadn't tried any if Fehrevari's work. What I had noticed was the almost wild eyed mania he seems to inspire in his adherents. And after finally getting through most of dark coil:ascension I finally understand why. There's not really a comparable author who approaches the setting in the same way. The carceri/sarastus trilogy (Nightbleed_Nightshift Nineteen_Nightfall) is easily the best horror I think anyone has pulled out of the setting. Easily the warp and daemons at their absolutely most insidious. I've never seen ANYONE do the warp with so much subtlety and so recognizably.

So far I think the Reverie is his most impressive work. It's intrinsically harder to make space marines seem trapped and endangered in a horror sense because they are monsters themselves. But for the Angels Resplendent, it's their very compassion and apathy that endangers them. Malpertius and the chapter's fortress monastery are successful and peaceful even among the normal human population to the point that it has become decadent without meaning to. Yet the astartes almost don't see the threat until it's too late. Especially poignant in the tragedy if Marisol who might well not have become such a monstrosity if Varzival had spoken to her directly earlier. The astartes are almost done in because of their inability to see the problems with the baseline human society around them. It was such a refreshing take.

Honestly, I feel like I'm doing Fehrevari justice. I could go on about this guy for hours. I'm off to start dark coil damnation now.
