Airbuds was one of my favorite apps to go on when i had sparetime because it was unique and was built by people who genuinely cared about creating a fun, social music experience rather than maximizing profit. It was simple, enjoyable, and free to use, and that made it easy to go on and had a simple system for scrolling and seeing what my friends were listening too. Knowing it came from a small team of developers who seemed focused on building a community instead of trying to sell something. The app's original appeal came from how effortless it was to share music and connect with others without feeling like every interaction would have their stupid subscription service shoved in my face.
That changed after the app added a subscription service. While I understand that businesses need to make money and need money to expand hire new staff, make better changes, etc. The shift toward a subscription model fundamentally altered the experience. Features that once were accessible are now locked behind a paywall, and subscription prompts appear so frequently (especially when viewing my profile shoving the stupid to seek certain features you need a airbuds subscription) that they interrupt what used to be a smooth, enjoyable app. Instead of focusing on discovering music with friends, I'm constantly reminded that there's a paywalled version I feel forced to buy. The app no longer feels designed around the user it feels designed around converting users into bank accounts.
It's disappointing because I wanted to keep supporting the app I originally loved. I don't mind developers earning revenue, especially when it helps maintain and improve a product, but there's a difference between offering an optional premium tier and making the free experience feel secondary. Airbuds lost some of the authenticity that made it stand out, replacing it with a business model that feels much more aggressive. What was once a fun, community driven app now feels like another platform where subscription prompts take center stage, and that's a shame.
I would love to hear the communities opinons on the subscription service that was added awhile back.
