Something absurd happened: somehow I got a raise for watching shows after my shift.

About 3 months ago, my personal laptop suddenly decided to break. I still don't know what happened, but it refuses to connect to any Wi-Fi at all. So I started using my work laptop to work and then I forget and sometimes watch movies after my shift or on Sundays.

I didn't even notice, but apparently management was seeing me online on Teams late at night and on weekends and thought I was working and grinding hard.

At the start of this week, my manager asked me to come into his office and told me I'd be getting a 7% raise because I've been "working really hard lately" lol.

I seriously can't stop laughing.

of course, I will refuse this raise but just wanted to share the situation

I was embarrassed because I brought dessert for my "friend's" birthday lol

It was my coworker's birthday, and a few of us wanted to do something nice for her, so we decided to get dessert and make a small surprise for her. I was sent with someone from work to get it, and honestly, I had no idea what to choose, but I remembered that she had once said she liked a kind of cake with caramelized sugar, so that's basically what I got.

It turned out to be chilled or almost frozen, apparently with a layer of ice cream, and one of our coworkers kept making lame comments about me and the cake like she was the funniest person in the world. And the birthday girl said she had never said anything about a cake with caramelized sugar, and had never even tried it.

I know she brought up that cake before, I'm not making it up. I think only me and two other people ate any of it, and I felt so stupid afterward because everyone acted so unappreciative.. I don't remember ever being that embarrassed just because I was trying to do something nice, bruh.

How do I tell my manager that I won't be able to keep working if I'm not going to get paid?

Our company has been in a difficult situation for a while. There's basically no money coming in, so they let most of the employees go. They kept me because I've been here for about 14 years and I handle almost all of the day-to-day operations work.

But I'm also working without a salary, and it's starting to wear me down. The pressure this is putting on my household, along with the increased workload I've had to take on after almost everyone left, has become more than I can handle.

We're still trying to prepare new offers/services that might bring in money, and part of me wants to stay involved to help keep everything from falling apart. But right now they owe me close to a third of my annual salary in back pay, and I haven't received any salary for about 7 weeks.

They keep saying they're looking for funding and doing everything they can to bring in money from an investor, but honestly, I feel like this should have happened before things got to this stage. I can't keep working for free.

How do I tell my manager that I'm not continuing unless I get paid what I'm owed?

Update: I talked to my boss, but he didn't really respond and quickly changed the subject. I've decided to move on and have already started looking for a new job. I've saved a few opportunities and plan to email all of them today to see what happens.

Update 2: One company got back to me and scheduled an interview for tomorrow. I'm planning to try the free version of InterviewMan to help me handle the conversation and present my experience more effectively. Has anyone used it before? Any reviews?

Well, you can't win I guess. He'd say it's immoral to sit at home not having a job, but it's immoral to work at home too.

I made it to the final interview, but the company owner is the one who tanked it.

Anyway, I passed four stages, a weird skills assessment, a personality quiz, and they even called my references. The recruiter called me to schedule the final interview and told me I was the last remaining candidate. It was supposed to be with the Head of Operations and a senior engineer, but I was surprised when the founder/CEO suddenly jumped in.

He then proceeded to ask me stupid questions like, "If you were a piece of office furniture, what would you be and why?" and asked me to "summarize my personality in three words" (even though I had just taken their quiz). Three days later, I got the rejection email. The reason? Apparently, I "lacked conviction" in my answers. Conviction in what, exactly? In my answers to his ridiculous, unanswerable questions.

Honestly, the whole thing is very frustrating. But in hindsight, that guy seems like a nightmare to work with. I honestly feel like I dodged a major bullet.
