The jury room painting
"The jury room" is a painting from 1959 by Norman Rockwell, it shows a jury room where 11 men are trying to convince one woman to change her vote in a court case. But she refuses to give in.
Rockwell wanted people to notice how difficult it was for women to be taken seriously at that time. In some U.S. states back then, women weren't even allowed to serve on juries yet.
The painting is basically about standing up for your beliefs, not following the crowd, and how women were often treated in the 1950s.
You can tell everyone's been arguing for a long time because, the room is messy, theres smoke everywhere, papers are crumpled on the floor, they all look annoyed.
Meanwhile the woman looks calm but firm. Her hand position and overall posture can absolutely be read as "closed body language", her arms are pulled inward, shes not leaning toward the group, hands close to herself.
It shows that shes overwhelmed and tired of being pressured, however shes not changing her mind on that case.
I love this painting so much i feel it looks so "human" idk if you can get what i mean...but like as if they're trying to show you how different humans act toward one single problem...
But i also REALLY want to understand the man that is sitting a bit far away from the crowd... is he re thinking his vote? Idk i feel so interested what Norman meant by distancing him... tell me what do you guys think!
