Political campaign events located at private residences

Has anyone ever been to a political nominee's campaign event that was located at a supporter's house? If so, what actually happens at those types of events? Are they worth attending even if you aren't a big donor?

I see photos of these types of events on social media, but the pictures imply that attendance is typically pretty light, so I'm wondering what they accomplish.

Matt Dunlap picks up two new endorsements, says he would welcome DCCC support

Matt Dunlap, the Democratic nominee for Maine's 2nd Congressional District, has received endorsements from End Citizens United and Maine AFL-CIO, according to each organization's Facebook page.

He also says he would welcome support from the the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has yet to add Dunlap to its program that highlights promising candidates (also known as the Red to Blue program). The DCCC had added Joe Baldacci to this program before he was defeated by Dunlap in Maine's June primary election.

David Costello says he'll run for U.S. Senate if Graham Platner withdraws

David Costello, who previously ran against Platner and Janet Mills in Maine's U.S. Senate primary, said on social media that he'll re-enter the race if Platner withdraws his nomination.

Here's his campaign website

On a side note, Troy Jackson, Jordan Wood and Nirav Shah have also expressed they would be interested in the nomination if Platner withdraws.

Disclaimer: This isn't me endorsing Costello or any of the other candidates. Just thought the information about Costello should be posted here since it's unlikely to be mentioned in a news article.

What's the strategy behind the Susan Collins ads that tell you to call and thank her?

Every other Susan Collins ad asks constituents to call Susan Collins and thank her for (insert random claim). I can't for the life of me figure out how that's supposed to help her become more popular. It feels like something that would just annoy most people, but maybe I'm missing something. The only conclusion I can come to is that it reminds you of something good that she did, but couldn't that still be accomplished without demanding that voters be grateful?

What's your favorite brand of honey roasted peanuts?

I've tried Planters (which are solid) a few other lesser known brands, but I have yet to find one that really stands out.

Where can you get Cape Cod honey bbq flavored chips?

I've been looking for them ever since my local Hannaford stopped selling them about a year ago. Does anyone know if these are still sold in Maine? If so, where can you get them?

What's your daily work commute like?

I've heard for years that long work commutes are pretty common in Maine, and I'm curious how true that actually is. I know some people who travel well over an hour for work at least 4-5 days a week, and others who are a quick 5-10 minute walk from their office. The longest I've heard of is probably three or four hours one way, but even that situation only involved a couple days in the office each week.

So for people in this sub:

  • How long is your work commute?
  • If you have a long commute - what do you like and dislike about it?
  • Where do you commute to and from (general area is fine)?

Feel free to leave out specific locations if you aren't comfortable providing that info.

Maine-made foods that are the best version of that type of food

I'm wondering if anyone here has had a type of food or drink in Maine that they thought was the best version of that type of food that they've had. For example, I legitimately feel like Gifford's is the best store-bought ice cream that I've ever had. And while I've had some good sandwiches in Maine (let's all shed a tear for Sisters Gourmet Deli in Portland), the best sandwich I've ever had was at a tiny takeout restaurant in Italy.

Question for people who have worked directly with any of the candidates for governor

For those of you who have worked directly with any of the candidates for governor, what was the situation, and what was it like to work with them?

Bonus question: For anyone who has been around one of the candidates when they were being their true selves, what were they like? In other words, what were they like when they were able to be themselves and weren't trying to impress anyone?

Dog Becomes Anxious When TV is On

In short, my dog becomes very anxious/reactive when the tv is on (it doesn't matter what's on tv) even if was perfectly fine before the tv was turned on. He basically just becomes unsettled - he'll pace around, sniff/lick every inch of the floor, stand in front of the couch and stare at us endlessly, and whine/bark at the tv at completely random times. This behavior will last until the tv is turned off. Basically, it has become almost impossible to watch tv with him in the room.

This has been going on for a couple years. It started with him paying attention to the television, but not being bothered by it. It then suddenly escalated when we were watching a show with a tiny dog that barked a lot - he started barking at the screen and losing his mind whenever the dog showed up. It then escalated from there and has turned into the behavior I previously described, and nothing we try seems to change anything. And for background, he is generally an anxious dog that is reactive to animals and a variety of noises (especially when he can't see the source of the noise).

Does anyone have experience with this type of behavior or have advice on what I should do? I think he's probably aware that animals occasionally show up on the tv screen, so he's on edge and anticipating that that could happen at any moment as long as the tv is on. However, he will sometimes bark at the screen when there aren't animals on it, so I'm kind of at a loss for what to do.
