Did anyone else realize their tools were the problem way later than they should have?

I’ve been messing around with wood carving for a few months and genuinely thought the whole hobby was supposed to feel kinda inconsistent.

Some days the knife would glide, other days it felt like I was fighting the wood every second. I kept assuming it was just beginner hands or bad technique.

Recently borrowed a different knife from someone during a weekend carving meetup and the difference honestly surprised me more than I expected. The cuts felt cleaner, less resistance, way easier to control especially around smaller details.

Not saying tools magically fix skill issues obviously, but I didn’t expect the feel itself to change this much.

How much do you all think tool quality actually matters once you get past absolute beginner stage?
