Early JRPG (Phantasy Star II/IV) illustrator [Hitoshi Yoneda] 1995 Art book (e-nu-ma e-lish) - A beautiful blend of sci-fi and fantasy

I'm going to share this art book here since this artist did produce work for Record of Lodoss War.

Hitoshi Yoneda was an illustrator around the late 1980s and 1990s and produced many works covering RPGs.

His art style often merges the high fantasy elements of the time with science fiction in a very distinct look mixed with water colors.

One of his earliest illustration work in Japanese RPGs was for the 1987 Falcom title Sorcerian.

Some of his well known illustrations are for the 1989 Phantasy Star 2 and 1993 Phatansy Star 4.

He even did a little illustration work for Record of Lodoss War and some of his works were used in Japanese RPG tabletop games.

He also did some work for Seiken Densetsu.

Yasuomi Umetsu Art Works (1999 art book) - A look inside (creator of Mezzo Forte/ Kite)

Most people who know of Yasuomi Umetsu will recognize his work on Mezzo Forte/ Kite, but he has a wealth of art covering many anime from the 1980s and 1990s up to his recent release (Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl).

Genma Taisen (1983) art book - Art by Katsuhiro Otomo (creator of Akira) [A look inside]

I didn't hear about this anime until recently. It is based on a 1967 manga.

This 1983 film was the 1st highest grossing anime film and the 8th highest grossing film in Japan for that year.

The art might look familiar because the character designer was Katsuhiro Otomo who is also the manga/anime creator for Akira (1988).

Tomonori Kogawa Illustrations (1985) - Beautiful painted illustrations in this 41 year old art book

Tomonori Kogawa was a well known animator/illustrator back in the 1980s with works such as;

Space Runaway Ideon

Combat Mecha Xabungle

Aura Battler Dunbine

Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross

Heavy Metal L-Gaim

I really like his water color art and his strong contrast of colors.

Picked up this art book a while back.

Robot Carnival was a 1987 anime OVA consisting of 9 shorts each by separate well known animators/directors.

I loved the variety and different styles for each short. It's not something I would expect to see done today.

Animators/Directors include:

  • Hidetoshi Ōmori
  • Hiroyuki Kitakubo
  • Hiroyuki Kitazume
  • Katsuhiro Otomo
  • Koji Morimoto
  • Mao Lamdo
  • Takashi Nakamura
  • Yasuomi Umetsu
