Just spent about 4 hours dealing with this, so maybe it saves someone else time.
After updating my FRITZ!Box 7690 to FRITZ!OS 8.22 my PC Wi-Fi basically broke. It would only connect to 2.4 GHz, while the 5 GHz network was visible but just stuck on connecting forever. On top of that I had random disconnects, high ping spikes and overall unstable internet.
The strange part is everything else worked fine. Laptop, phones, no issues at all. Only my PC had this problem.
My setup is a MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi with built-in Wi-Fi 6E (probably MediaTek). I’m guessing there’s some compatibility issue with the new firmware.
I tried pretty much everything: changing channels, disabling Wi-Fi 7, forcing WPA2, resetting network settings, reconnecting from scratch. Nothing helped.
What actually fixed it was downgrading the router firmware back to 8.02. Finding it wasn’t straightforward, I had to dig through the AVM download pages and even use Wayback Machine to get the older version.
After the downgrade everything worked instantly again. 5 GHz connects as fast as before, ping is low and stable as before, no random internet drops.
So yeah, if you’re having similar issues, especially if only your PC is affected, it might be faster to just downgrade and move on.
