Disappointed by HDR on the XG32UCWMG (coming from PG27UQ) — HDR is way too dim. Any fixes/settings?

Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded to the ASUS ROG Swift XG32UCWMG, but I’ve hit a total wall with its HDR performance. Coming from the PG27UQ—which was an absolute HDR monster—the HDR on this panel is honestly a massive disappointment.

It’s so dim that it completely kills the viewing experience. I’ve actually been forced to watch my 4K movies in SDR instead just to get a bright, usable image, which feels terrible for a monitor in this tier.

Note: I’ve already exhaustively tested and cycled through every single OSD setting on the monitor itself (HDR profiles, uniform brightness, local dimming modes, brightness locks, etc.), so the issue isn't a buried menu setting on the display.

Before I give up entirely and return it, I wanted to ask:

  • Software Tone Mapping: Has anyone gotten good results fixing this with custom player setups like mpv, madVR, or JRVR to forcibly boost mid-tone brightness for HDR movies?
  • Calibration Tricking: Does using the Windows HDR Calibration app to artificially cap max nits lower actually help force a brighter picture on this panel?
  • NVIDIA/AMD Driver Tweaks: Are there specific GPU Control Panel overrides or features (like RTX Video HDR) that make this watchable?
  • Is this severe overall dimming just an inherent ABL/OLED limitation compared to high-nit FALD IPS beasts like the PG27UQ?

Any advice or external software tweaks would be greatly appreciated!
