Manon case is a reflection of what black peoples deal in their everyday life

What makes this situation especially upsetting is what it represents for many Black fans.

When Manon was chosen to be part of Katseye, she became a source of representation for Black girls in a global music group backed by both Korean and Western entertainment companies. For many people, seeing someone who looked like them on that stage mattered. It made them feel seen and included.

If Manon is no longer part of the group, many fans feel that her contributions are being overlooked. Whether intentional or not, some believe the company is acting as though she was never an important part of Katseye’s journey. Every member contributed to building this group, and Manon was one of them. She also brought many Black fans into the fandom because, for once, they saw themselves represented.

Today, some people argue that the group is still diverse because it has five remaining members from different backgrounds or because another member has darker skin. But diversity and Black representation are not the same thing. Having four Asian members and one White/Latina member does not replace Black representation. Likewise, having darker skin does not automatically make someone Black. Lara is Indian, and while she represents the South Asian community, that representation is valuable in its own right, it is simply not the same as Black representation. Both identities deserve to be recognized and respected for what they are, rather than being treated as interchangeable.

Whether you like Manon or not is completely beside the point.

Whether Manon and the girls are in conflict or not is also beside the point.

The way this entire situation has been handled is what many people find deeply unprofessional. Regardless of what happened behind the scenes, the lack of transparency and the way fans have been left to speculate has created an environment where harassment, misinformation, and dehumanization have flourished. That is what many people are criticizing.

What is also concerning is how quickly some people justify behavior they would likely condemn if it happened to someone else. When conversations about microaggressions, disrespect, or unfair treatment toward Black people are immediately dismissed or mocked, it reflects how normalized these attitudes have become in some spaces. That normalization is part of why discussions about systemic racism continue to matter. It’s not only about one incident, it’s about recurring patterns and whose experiences are considered worthy of empathy.

Some people have embraced the “OT5” narrative simply because they formed a negative opinion of Manon from a heavily edited documentary filmed years ago. Reality television and documentaries are edited to tell a story, not to show every nuance of a person’s character. Holding onto that portrayal indefinitely while denying someone basic dignity is neither fair nor reasonable.

At the end of the day, we are all human beings. Regardless of whether you support Manon, support the remaining members, or support neither, everyone deserves humanity, respect, and fairness.
And to the people whose only contribution to this conversation is insulting the person at the center of it: harassment is not accountability. If your response to a difficult situation is to dehumanize someone you’ve never met, it may be worth reflecting on why empathy feels so difficult. We can disagree without abandoning basic human decency.

Finally, I want to make one thing clear: if this had happened to Lara or any other member, I would be speaking up exactly the same way. This isn’t about defending one person because she’s Black. It’s about believing that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. Those values shouldn’t depend on race, popularity, or whether someone belongs to your own community.

Manon situation update

  1. Manon was allegedly mistreated in her contract from the very beginning because of her skin tone and hair type.
  2. There were reportedly tensions within the group, including jealousy and possible misogynoir.
  3. During the tour, it’s rumored that she got into an argument with one of the members that led to a fight, and that some very hurtful things were said…

I hope it’s not true but it’s a really sad situation…
