Obi's Japanese Confession Scene
I want to talk about this scene specifically in Japanese because there are several layers to it that I find interesting. The translation of how Zen asks Obi first if he likes him and then Shirayuki is down at the bottom corner.
オビおまえ俺のこと好きだろ
はい
白雪のことも？
Obi, you like me, don't you?
Yes.
And Shirayuki, too?
The way Zen asks is very straightforward in both cases. By adding 「も」, Zen makes it clear that he is asking the same meaning as the original question as himself.
And Obi's answer addresses this. He responds with:
はい
俺はお嬢さんの事が好きですよ
Literally: Yes, I like my lady.
But, the way that Obi phrases it, is the exact same way Zen phrased the first question about Obi's feelings towards Zen himself. By answering in this way, Obi was being very direct and honest- the first question was about his romantic feelings about Zen and by answering in the exact same way, Obi wasn't wiggling out of the confession by simply stating he like Shirayuki, but not in a romantic way. Which tracks with Obi later saying that he didn't want to keep it a secret from Zen because that wouldn't feel right.
I really appreciate how clear the Japanese version is when it comes to this scene.
