My vampires die of cancer. What about yours?
In my world, vampires are immortal, but every time they regenerate, there's a chance of mutation.
Over centuries, these mutations accumulate. Some are harmless, while others can change a vampire's body, mind, or abilities. Eventually, their cells may begin multiplying uncontrollably, developing something similar to cancer. Their greatest strength can slowly become their downfall.
One of the most infamous examples was Esdor Horus, known as the Undying King.
One night, Esdor attacked a village known for its blacksmiths. During the attack, one of the blacksmiths managed to fight back and realized that Esdor's regeneration could be exploited. He repeatedly wounded the vampire, forcing his body to heal itself again and again.
Esdor survived the encounter and left the village alive. However, the repeated regenerations had triggered mutations that would continue to develop long after the battle was over.
Over the following months and years, his body began to change. His cells multiplied uncontrollably, his regeneration became increasingly unstable, and his condition gradually worsened. No matter what he tried, he couldn't stop the process.
Years after the encounter, Esdor Horus finally died. The blacksmith hadn't killed him that night; he had set in motion a process that would eventually bring down a vampire who had survived for centuries.
What are vampires like in your world? Do they have unusual weaknesses, strange biology, or their own ways of dying?
