Itemized checks are obviously fairer, but they kind of changed the vibe of group dinners

Maybe this is just my friend group, but splitting the bill evenly was never really about the math.

If everyone ordered roughly the same amount, nobody wanted to turn the last ten minutes of dinner into an accounting exercise. someone paid a little more, someone paid a little less, and you figured it would probably even out over time.

We went out this weekend and the place had us order through a menuforma page at the table. everyone's stuff stayed separate on our phones, so by the time we were ready to leave there really wasn't much to calculate.

Someone still suggested the usual “let’s just split it evenly.”

Normally i probably would've gone along with it without thinking much about it, but this time the differences were sitting right there. one person had a few cocktails, somebody else ordered a couple extras, and a few of us had pretty basic meals.

So we just paid our own totals.

Objectively, it was better. nobody had to do weird mental math, nobody quietly covered somebody else's drinks, and there was basically nothing to argue about.

But the end of dinner also felt strangely different.

The old way had this little bit of social ambiguity to it. you weren't really thinking about exactly what everybody spent. once every person's total is sitting there separately, that disappears. suddenly it felt less like “we all had dinner together” and more like four people closing out four transactions at the same table.

I'm not saying i'd go back. paying for exactly what you ordered makes way more sense, especially when alcohol is involved.

I just didn't expect something that made the bill less awkward to also make the whole thing feel slightly more transactional.

Maybe i'm just attached to an old social habit. curious if other people have noticed the same thing as restaurants make splitting checks easier.

UK government moves to legalise plug-in solar panels for flats and balconies

DESNZ published their summary of responses on the plug-in solar consultation. The short version is that households will be allowed to install up to 800W of solar panels without needing full planning permission or a traditional roof installation.

This is aimed at the roughly 4.3 million flat owners and 8.8 million renters who couldn't participate in solar before because they don't have a roof to put panels on. A balcony, a garden wall, or even a freestanding frame in the back garden would work.

Germany has had an equivalent scheme running for about a decade and has over 1.1 million installations now. The average German household using one of these systems saves a significant chunk on their electricity bill annually.

The UK version is still in early stages. Panels are covered but battery storage hasn't been included in the framework yet. Given that UK electricity is at 27.69p/kWh, the savings potential is there once the full system including storage is available.
