Tumbleweed vs Leap

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the community and not fully up to speed on all things openSUSE yet, so I'd love to get your thoughts:

Which do you prefer between Tumbleweed and Leap, and why? Are there more software packages available on Tumbleweed compared to Leap? Is there a big difference in driver support and stability between the two?

P.S. Yesterday I made the switch from Debian to openSUSE Tumbleweed, and apparently the NVIDIA drivers are out of sync, so my driver isn't working right now. Some users mentioned that this happens occasionally, so I was considering switching to Leap, but I'm not sure if it would be the right fit for me. That's why I'm asking for your input.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Can’t install nvidia drivers

Hello everybody,

I’m ex Debian user and I’m trying to install nvidia drivers on my opensuse tumbleweed for my nvidia rtx4060ti.

In the following documentation https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA\_drivers it clearly says that first I need to run zypper install openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed-NVIDIA (which for my surprise, it uninstalls the microos version that randomly got installed on my computer). And after that I run zypper in nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-meta .

The issue is that:

  1. MOKutils doesn’t show up in the terminal asking for a password. Also there is no nvidia-pubkeys folder in /usr/share
  2. The nvidia driver that is installed has only 120MB.
  3. Resolution is locked at 768p and 60hz (my monitor is 244hz).

I can’t find any official documentation about installing nvidia drivers. I want the full nvidia driver experince like I’ve had it on Debian.

How did you managed to work it out with it?

Is this documentation obsolete?

Thanks!

Hardware choice for a new user: The Pixel ecosystem vs. waiting for the upcoming Motorola devices

Hello GrapheneOS Team and community,

First of all, thank you for your immense dedication to privacy, security, and the open-source space. The work you do is highly appreciated.

I am currently planning my migration to GrapheneOS, but I find myself at a hardware crossroads. I am trying to choose between adopting a Google Pixel now or waiting for the upcoming Motorola devices, and I was hoping you could provide some insight to help me make a future-proof decision.

My dilemma stems from two main points:

1. The Motorola Partnership (5 Months In) It’s been about 5 months since the highly exciting announcement of your long-term collaboration with Motorola. I’ve seen the recent news mentioning that future Motorola devices (expected around 2027) will finally meet GrapheneOS’s strict security standards, thanks in part to Qualcomm’s hardware security improvements (like secure element-backed rate limiting). Now that you are several months into this working partnership, how is the collaboration progressing behind the scenes? Are these upcoming Motorola devices shaping up to be the new "gold standard" for GrapheneOS, offering a level of hardware-OS integration that rivals or even exceeds what we currently have with Pixels?

2. The Pixel Ecosystem & AOSP Changes On the flip side, I have been following the discussions regarding Google moving certain AOSP components into closed-source territory. I understand this puts a heavier burden on your development team, sometimes requiring complex reverse engineering just to maintain features. Does this shift threaten the long-term ease of development for GrapheneOS on Pixel devices? Does it make the push toward OEMs like Motorola not just a great alternative, but a necessary technical evolution for the project's future?

I completely understand if exact hardware roadmaps or certain backend details are bound by NDAs. However, any official insight into how the team views the long-term viability of the upcoming Motorola hardware vs. the current Pixel ecosystem would be incredibly helpful for me—and likely for many others in this community trying to make an informed decision.

Thank you again for your time, your hard work, and any guidance you can offer.

Planning to switch from iPhone to GOS as a daily driver. I have a few questions (Future hardware, Banking apps in EU/Romania)

I’m new to the forum, so I’d like to start by greeting everyone. I want to move away from my iPhone and use GrapheneOS as my daily driver because I really like the philosophy behind the operating system. I have a few questions:

  1. Between the upcoming Pixel 11 Pro with Titan M3 and the upcoming Motorola with Snapdragon launching in 2027, which of the two will be more secure? Will the Titan M3 still have the upper hand because it’s a dedicated chip? I've heard that Titan M chips are the most resilient. Do you think Qualcomm is going to be more secure than Titan M?
  2. Will the Graphene developers focus more on Motorola given the new partnership? Or will the Pixel remain the "favorite child" of the project?
  3. I notice on forums that people complain about banking apps on GrapheneOS. How bad is the situation really? Do you think things will improve or get worse in the future? I don't necessarily care about NFC payments (though I'd appreciate it if they worked), but I'm mostly interested in the online banking app itself working. I'm from Romania, and the most common banks here are Banca Transilvania, ING, Raiffeisen Bank, and BCR. Btw, I should mention that I'd be willing to use sandboxed Google Play Services.
  4. Do you use GOS as your daily driver or as a secondary phone? For those of you using it as a daily driver, how satisfied are you with it?

Thank you in advance for your answers and for taking the time to reply!
