I lost my wallet on a late-night drive. A stranger drove two hours to bring it back.
Last month, I was driving home after visiting my parents. It was late, I was tired, and I stopped at a gas station to grab a coffee and fill up.
Somehow, I managed to put my wallet on top of my car while I was paying and then completely forgot about it.
I didn't realize it was missing until the next morning when I went to get breakfast. I checked my car, my room, everywhere I could think of. Then I remembered the gas station.
My license, debit card, and around $60 in cash were all in that wallet.
I called the station, hoping someone had turned it in, but they hadn't seen it. I was already preparing myself for the headache of canceling my cards and replacing my license.
Then, around noon, I got an alert from my doorbell camera.
There was an older man standing on my porch with my wallet in his hand.
I opened the door and asked him where he'd found it.
He told me he'd been at the same gas station the night before and spotted my wallet near the highway exit. Somehow, it had survived all the traffic.
He checked the address on my license and realized I lived about two hours away.
Instead of mailing it, handing it over to someone else, or simply leaving it somewhere, he decided to drive the entire distance himself so he could make sure it reached me.
I opened it in front of him, and everything was still there. Cards, license, cash—nothing was missing.
I tried to give him the $60 as a thank-you, but he wouldn't accept it.
He just smiled and said, "Pay it forward someday."
Then he got back into his truck and left.
Honestly, I didn't expect something like this. You hear so many stories about people taking advantage of situations, so having a complete stranger go that far just to return something that wasn't even his really stuck with me.
I guess there are still plenty of good people out there.
Has a stranger ever done something unexpectedly kind for you?
