Why "boring" businesses like car washes and laundromats build more real wealth than most startups
Everyone's chasing the next big startup idea, but the people quietly getting rich are buying the businesses nobody talks about at parties. I've spent 15 years brokering these deals, and the pattern is consistent. Boring businesses cash flow from day one. No burn rate, no waiting years to "maybe" turn a profit. They're recession resistant because demand doesn't disappear when the economy dips. Pipes still burst, trash still gets picked up, cars still get dirty. Banks like financing them too, since the revenue is predictable. Down payments as low as 10 percent aren't unusual. A few examples I'd point people toward: car washes, pest control, laundromats, waste management, roofing/HVAC/plumbing, funeral homes, parking lots, billboards, porta-potty rentals, mobile home parks. None of these make for a good pitch deck. All of them make for a good bank statement. Happy to answer questions if anyone's actually looking into buying one of these.
