First game ever, started pitcher and got line drives to the face. Our league doesn't use a pitching screen

I played my first game of a rec league with a team myself and friends created spontaneously. I pitched a solid 4 innings until, in the top of the fifth, the third pitch was line drives directly at me. I was able to get my glove up just enough in time to tip it into my eye instead of my jaw.

What can I do differently as pitcher to prevent more injuries? I don't mind the black eye, but I can't be getting a broken jaw, nose or concussion. My next game is Thursday, so any tips are very appreciated.
