With the Free Friday program starting up for the summer in June, I'm interested in your recommendations for places to go on commuter rail.

Specifically what I'm looking for are stations where trains arrive in centers of towns/cities, rather than Park & Rides, with interesting things to do within a mile or so of the station. I've been to some of the well known places like Lowell, Salem, Rockport, Providence. My first Friday plan is to go to Manchester-by-the-Sea.

I do know about the Mass By Train website but if there's a locale you really love, I'd love to hear about it.
