Crow brought me drugs as a present (Edgar update)

Disclaimer: It was a funny moment, but drugs are no joke.

Hi.

This was Eddie’s third gift to me. Fans of Ed know that the first one was a plastic bottle cap, and the second was a nice piece of moss. Never would I have thought the next one would be drugs. I do live in a problematic district in a big city, though.

I know Edgar is fascinated by packaging and other man-made objects. Seeing my bro trying to get to the substance worried me, so I took it away and threw it out. Thankfully, Ed didn’t seem too upset that I rejected their present.

Eddie really is a smart one, but drugs are unpredictable, and I doubt our friend ever had any experience with them. Don’t leave your drugs lying around – maybe reconsider taking them in the first place.

Stay healthy, everyone.

Bye.

Provide some water, friends (Edgar update)

Hi.

Ed and I are hot, but we’re doing well. Our city reached 39 °C (~102 °F) yesterday, and it’s unbearable. Hardly anyone is leaving their homes, and even the birds are staying in the shade of the trees.

It’s important to give our bros not only water these days, but food as well. They’re finding fewer worms and insects while needing more energy to keep cool.

Eddie is molting at the moment, as you can see in the clip (those cute little white fluffy tufts). At first I was worried – thought they had been attacked, but it’s perfectly normal for crows to shed their old feathers to make room for new ones, especially toward the end of June.

I haven’t seen Noxi since my last update. There are no new babies either. I was hoping we’d have a few more joining us this season, but I’m gradually starting to doubt it.

I’ll keep you updated. Stay refreshed.

Bye.

(Edgar update)

Hi.

Ed and I are doing well. Today, they let me feed them from my hand again after a few weeks of keeping their distance. I know this behavior, though. When Noxi hatched a month ago, Eddie became very cautious. It wasn’t until Nox became a fledgling that they started coming close again. So I’m hoping there might be more little Edgars joining the family soon.

Noxi still enjoys sunbathing on rooftops. They’ve become almost as big as Edgar now and can only be distinguished by their behavior and the pattern of their pectoral feathers.

Nox also has this habit of lifting up objects I place for them. For example, if I put down a small bowl of food or water, they’ll often pick it up with their beak before doing anything else. This is something neither Ed nor Ed has ever done or shown to their kid. I guess it’s just curiosity, which I absolutely love.

I’ll keep you updated on any potential babies.

Bye.

First flight lessons (Edgar/Noxi update)

Context: This video was taken four days ago.

Hi.

Edgar, their partner, and their kid Noxi are doing well. After the first day, I saw Noxi again for three more days. I kept my distance, as most of you suggested, gave Eddie food, and they passed it on to Nox. I haven’t spotted the fledgling for the past two days, but I’m not worried. Ed & Ed are behaving as usual.

I looked into crow habits, and fledglings often try to reach higher places while learning to fly. Especially in large cities like mine, it’s not uncommon for them to hop through trees to reach rooftops or balconies.

Cashews and mealworms are still on the menu, but hard-boiled egg yolk is the only thing Edgar will eat out of my hand these days.

They haven’t ruffled my hair or landed on me lately. I guess watching over Noxi 24/7 is exhausting enough for them already. I’m not complaining though — nice to keep a hairstyle for once.

Bye.

Meet Noxi (Edgar update)

Hi.

This came as a very happy surprise. Especially after yesterday’s post, where I said I wasn’t even sure whether Eddie and their partner had a nestling. Well… they definitely do.

I was on my way to the bakery when I spotted Ed and their partner much earlier than usual, wandering around the lawn of a nearby retirement home. They’ve been there before, but it’s about 70 meters (~77 yards) from the nest they’ve been fiercely guarding lately.

While I was wondering what they were doing there, this little dude suddenly crossed my path on the sidewalk. No doubt it’s Eddie’s offspring. As I moved closer to record the video you just saw, Edgar landed nearby and let out a deep, serious growl I immediately understood. So I backed off and offered Ed some mealworms, a few of which were passed straight to the fledgling.

Noxi can’t fly yet. Even walking sometimes ends in a clumsy stumble. The little one does these wing-assisted hops, though, which seem to help it reach safer spots. Over the weekend, I’ll probably just make my presence known occasionally without interfering too much.

I know my posts often sound less emotional than I actually feel, but trust me, this genuinely moved me more than I can put into words.

Any tips on how I should behave around them right now or what I could do to help? My guess is that giving them some extra space until Noxi can fly is probably the best thing, since I might currently be seen as a threat.

And most importantly: do you like the name?

Bye.

Nesting behavior (Edgar update)

Hi.

It’s been a while. I was on vacation and also started a new job. Eddie and I are doing well.

Two weeks ago, Ed wouldn’t come very close to me anymore. They seemed much more cautious and rarely left the nest. I still can’t tell whether there are nestlings inside, but the protective behavior could definitely be a sign.

At one point, a buzzard appeared in the distance. Edgar noticed it immediately, tilted their head, and suddenly made an alarm call I had never heard before. Their partner showed up within seconds and helped chase the buzzard away. Aside from that, they barely let pigeons or other crows get anywhere near their tree.

As for food, I cut back a little on the cashews since too much fat isn’t ideal for the chicks. I also bought mealworms, which I soak in warm water
(thanks u/Sparkieger for detailed information).

And this is Edgar now. They’re not keeping their distance anymore, so maybe the parental stress has eased a little.

And no, it doesn’t hurt — Ed’s only picking at strands of hair.

Bye.
