SCHOOL OF HIP: Tragically Hip Live: July 22 - August 20, 2016

Can it really be 10 years since the Tragically Hip embarked on their final tour, following the terminal brain cancer diagnosis of the late Gord Downie? Can it really be 10 years since they performed that deeply moving and fantastic final show on August 20, in their hometown of Kingston, ON, viewed by 12 million heartbroken Canadians celebrating their beloved band?

To mark the anniversary the Hip is releasing an outstanding triple album live set on Aug. 21, documenting that final tour. In advance of its release, Chaz and I preview select songs from the album on our School of Hip podcast and tell the remarkable, inspiring story behind the tour, as a dying Downie pulled off the Herculean feat of those stunning final performances.

We also talk about that final Kingston show, which the CBC will rebroadcast live on Aug. 22 (including on YouTube).

This really is a special one, folks, and a Moment in Hip History. Check it out!

SCHOOL OF HIP (Ep. 17): Phantom Power Side B

School of Hip Ep. 17: Phantom Power Side B

In this episode Chaz and I are joined by editor-in-chief of the Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun, Dave Breakenridge. Dave's Tragically Hip fandom is such that this summer he launched an online elimination tournament (The Tragically Hip Best Song Bracket) to determine by fan votes just what is the Hip's greatest song.

Before taking on Side B of Phantom Power we delve into reviews of the 1998 album from the time of its release, both positive and quite hilariously negative (we're looking at you, NME). Then it's the track-by-track, standouts being the infectious Cold War-era hockey-as-love story metaphor, Fireworks, the document of a weary, maturing band on the road, Escape is at Hand for the Traveling Band, and the oddity that is Emperor Penguin.

Check us out here (and on other podcasting platforms). Please subscribe, rate and review to spike those algorithms, helping us grow our show!

Online elimination tournament: Vote for the Tragically Hip's Greatest Song

VOTE FOR THE TRAGICALLY HIP'S GREATEST SONG

https://challonge.com/i1k442mw

Here's a bit of summer fun for all the Hipheads out there. Dave Breakenridge, editor-in-chief of the Edmonton Sun and the Edmonton Journal, has put together an online elimination tournament pitting Tragically Hip songs against one another via fan votes to determine the Hip's greatest song.

(Click the link within this web page to play along)

Today's matchup is an interesting one. Small Town Bringdown The first Tragically Hip song on record (on the self-titled debut) vs Wait So Long, a track from the Up to Here sessions left on the cutting room floor (and released as the bonus track on the remastered rerelease from 2024).

Fans can also play along on Twitter by following Breakenridge @ BreakenridgeYEG

Watch for an upcoming episode of School of Hip where Dave joins us to discuss this Hip song battle royal, as well as a side of Phantom Power!

School of Hip (Ep. 16) Phantom Power (Side A)

SCHOOL OF HIP (Ep. 16) Phantom Power Side A

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/school-of-hip/id1853343538?i=1000773794057

In this episode Chaz and Heath welcome - straight from the Paris of the Prairies - Saskatoon writer, documentarian, film critic, and radio big wig Craig Silliphant. We talk about his book Bunnyhug Cynic and the excellent Gord Downie essay therein; we school Chaz as to what the hell a bunnyhug is; and then we dive head first into Side A of Phantom Power.

From the constellation laden skies of Bobcaygeon (fascists need not apply) to the bare-breasted lawn mowing ladies of Poets, Phantom Power contains some of the Hip's finest moments, but are there hints of a lag on the horizon?

Check it out, Hipsters! Please subscribe and give us glowing five star reviews to spike those algorithms, helping us grow our show!

School of Hip Ep. 15: Visiting Scholar Derek Lathrop of The Hip Experience

School of Hip (ep. 15): Visiting Scholar Derek Lathrop of The Hip Experience

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/school-of-hip/id1853343538?i=1000771761422

As Canada's most cherished band dearly departed, it's no surprise that there's tons of Tragically Hip tribute band out there, playing clubs, festivals and theatres across the country (and beyond).

We took a detour from our journey through the Hip catalogue for a fun chat with Derek Lathrop, the Gord Downie doppleganger from one of the best and most in-demand Hip Tribs out there, The Hip Experience.

Food for thought: Should the Hip's management have targeted the jam band scene for Kingston's finest? Would Deadheads, Phish Phans, Dave Matthews devotees and the like have changed the Hip's trajectory?

Dig in, Hipsters. Feel free to like, rate and review, spiking those algorithms so we can grow our show!

School's (not) Out For Summer for the School of Hip!

Hiya, Hipsters. Just wanted to give you all a heads up that as the summer is upon us, the School of Hip podcast will be interrupting its regularly scheduled programming.

Hey, all schools take the summer off, right? 😉

We kid. No, we're not taking the summer off - we've got three great episodes in the works now, in fact - but our schedule (a new episode every second Sunday - and sometimes Monday!) won't be as consistent. Rather, episodes might drop a bit more sporadically until the Fall.

But please keep us on your radars and watch for new episodes, because appear they shall!

In the meantime, in keeping with that school spirit, here's a few pics of Hip as mere school boys. And one from the EP / Up to Here days, by the look of it, taken, we believe, by their late tour manager, Dave Powell, in what appears to be a high school locker room!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

SCHOOL OF HIP (Ep. 14) TROUBLE AT THE HENHOUSE (Side B)

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/school-of-hip/id1853343538?i=1000768362943

Had some technical difficulties with this episode where only the first 15 minutes launched out of the gate. We reloaded it and it came out in full but it took a bit of horseplay for the full version to appear on people’s devices. I know for myself it worked to unfollow the show on iTunes, then re-follow and - ala peanut butter sandwiches(!) - it appeared.

Apologies to anybody who had a headache with it.

We hope you’ll jump through the necessary hoops, listeners and listeners-to-be, because it was a fun show with the return of the Podfather Corey Morrissette, who joins me n’ Chaz to take on Side B of Trouble at the Henhouse. Featuring a Butts Wigglin’ Kids in the Hall tune, canons shooting coconut cream, and a strange Apartment Song about a lady who shows off her ugly feet! Does this side of deep cuts reveal a more playful Tragically Hip? Yes! Does it pale next to their previous masterpieces? Listen to the buried treasure that is Put it Off and you tell us!

Check it out, Hipsters!

SCHOOL OF HIP (ep. 13): TROUBLE AT THE HENHOUSE (30TH Anniversary!)

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/school-of-hip/id1853343538?i=1000765973785

30 years ago today (that's May 7, 1996) the Tragically Hip released their fifth album, Trouble at the Henhouse. On our newest episode of the School of Hip podcast we begin our deep dive into that beloved album (joined by a bonafide Tragically Hip Super Fan).

As with their previous record Day for Night, Henhouse is an album of feverish dreams (Mr. Downie says as much on the album's masterpiece, Ahead by a Century), but while Day for Night is an album of nightmares, it might be said that the dreams on Henhouse are of a gentler, more blissful nature, by and large (that terrifying album cover notwithstanding!) There's a new lightness at play, even as the band continues to push boundaries.

Speaking of Ahead by a Century, how about the tune's so-called "dirty version" early in its inception? We also give a listen to a newly released cover of the song, featuring the hero of sad emo folk everywhere, City and Colour!

Meanwhile, did Downie have Kurt Cobain on the brain while recording Henhouse? Certain lyrical passages may suggest so. Did you know that Nirvana opened for the Hip, pre-Nevermind? Gord, Kurt and a dive bar pinball machine. What a snapshot!

Check us out, Hipsters. (And if you happened to subscribe, rate and review, we wouldn't be at all mad about it!)
