Was Drona actually poor? Was Ashvatthama really raised in a poor household?

The time when Karna and Drona fought side by side and overpowered the Pandavas.

1. Background and Context.

On the 14th night of the Kurukshetra War, the Kouravas were in bad shape at a particular moment. Satyaki was devastating the Kaurava army after defeating Duryodhana. Arjuna had defeated Shakuni and was routing the Kaurava forces, while Dhrishtadyumna had overpowered Drona and was likewise routing the Kaurava army in his presence.

Seeing his army being slaughtered, Duryodhana was filled with rage. He went to Drona and Karna, berating them and urging them to fight with greater determination.

2. Destruction by Drona and Karna Part 1.

Duryodhana's words had the desired effect. Together Drona and Karna, supported by the Kaurava army, advanced against the Parthas. In response, the united Pandava forces, including Bhima, Arjuna, and Satyaki, marched forward to confront them. Once the confrontations began, the Somakas and Panchalas also joined the battle.

Despite the presence of Arjuna, Bhima, and the others, Drona and Karna devastated the armies of the Pandavas, Somakas, and Panchalas. Their onslaught was so fierce that the soldiers began fleeing the battlefield even in the sight of the five Pandavas.

3. The Pandavas rallied their scattered soldiers and once again launched an attack on Drona and Karna.

4. Destruction by Drona and Karna Part 2.

In Part 1, Drona initiated the destruction. Here, it is Karna who takes the lead. First, he defeats Dhrishtadyumna, then routs the Panchalas and Srinjayas before the very sight of Arjuna and Yudhishthira.

“The king is frightened of the supreme valour of Radheya, the son of Kunti.”This is a translation error. Here, \"the son of Kunti\" should refer to Yudhishthira, not Karna.

5. Aftermath

Arjuna asked Krishna to take him to Karna so he could stop him. However, because Karna still possessed the Vasavi Shakti, Krishna instead instructed Ghatotkacha to engage Karna in battle.

After the death of Ghatotkacha, Drona and Karna continued their destruction.

Ranking days of the war during Bhishma Parva according to how much I liked reading them.

Ngl, the way the Kurukshetra War is described in unabridged translations of the Mahabharata is genuinely amazing. I've also read up to Books 15 of the Iliad, and while its battle scenes are good, I personally find the Mahabharata's war descriptions even better.

My personal ranking of the days of the war during Bhishma Parva according to how much I liked them are:-

  1. Day 10.

  2. Day 8.

  3. Day 1.

  4. Day 2.

  5. Day 3.

  6. Day 9.

  7. Day 7.

  8. Day 4.

  9. Day 6.

  10. Day 5.

For me Day 1, 2, 3 and 9 are almost equal in terms of likability.

What do y'all think about this interpretation of Karna not participating in the first 10 days of war

Source:

>But let me respond to the harsh words that the grandfather has spoken. Let him listen to the consequences. The grandfather will see me in the assembly hall, but not in the war. But until he has obtained peace, I will lay down my weapons and all the kings of the earth will not witness my power.”

* Chapter 724(61), BORI.

>There is one condition under which I will willingly become your general, not otherwise. You should hear about this. O lord of the earth! Let Karna or me fight first. This son of a suta always seeks to rival me in battle

>Karna said, “O king! As long as Gangeya is alive, I will never fight. I will fight with the one who wields the Gandiva only after Bhishma has been killed.”’

* Chapter 816(153), BORI.

>O Radheya! Until Bhishma has been killed, come over to our side. O Radheya! If you perceive both sides to be equal, after Bhishma has been killed, go and fight again and help Dhritarashtra’s son.’

>‘Karna replied, ‘O Keshava! I will not do anything that causes displeasure to Dhritarashtra’s son. Know that I am engaged in Duryodhana’s welfare and have given up my life for him.’”

* Chapter 901(41), BORI.

>O Karna! In this battle, my army is becoming weaker and my weapons are being exhausted. I have been deceived by the Pandavas. They cannot be slain, even by the gods. I am full of doubt as to what I should do in this battle.’ O great king! The son of the suta then spoke to the king. ‘O best of the Bharata lineage! Do not grieve. I will do what is agreeable to you. Let Bhishma, Shantanu’s son, withdraw from this great battle. O descendant of the Bharata lineage! When Gangeya has withdrawn from the battle and has cast aside his weapons, I will kill the Parthas, together with all the Somakas
