Rod Butt Repair - Fool's Errand?

I was fishing this weekend off the back of a boat, turned around awkwardly and slipped. While going down I flailed to grab the rail but my hand caught hold of a rod in the holder instead and snapped the butt of a new 9' Penn Battle rod right off, all while still landing flat on my back. Not my proudest moment.

I figure I can repair this though, right? Since the butt doesn't flex anyway, loading up with epoxy shouldn't negatively impact the overall performance, I think.

I bought both a 1/2 oak dowel and a 1/2 aluminum tube from Lowes, as well as a Amazon kit for repairing rod tips and some extra epoxy. Figured I can use either the tube or dowel as a reinforcement spine and epoxy together, maybe with some thread wrap over the top.

Does this seem a reasonable approach or am I wasting my time?

Anyone have an opinion on using the oak ($4) vs the aluminum ($8)?
