Fine in crate but goes crazy when left free roaming?
Wondered if anyone had experience on this - my whippet is 1.5 years and crate trained. He’s pretty fine in the crate, can be left for a few hours without whining etc. Mostly just sleeps.
However, on the odd occasion I leave him free roaming (e.g. heatwave in the UK meant it was far too hot to leave him crated), he goes absolutely crazy. Barking, destructive, crying. The last time I did this, my neighbour said he only settled after a couple of hours (🥲).
Obviously aware that he sees his crate as a safe space. But I would love to get to the point where he isn’t crated anymore, especially if this heat is going to continue and as he gets older. Has anyone had a similar experience and any tips on how to get him settled outside of the crate?? Is it starting from scratch all over?
