Digging for Sand worms in southern California beaches.

Got downvoted and a couple DMs telling me I’m “full of shit” for mentioning free live sandworms, so here’s a friendly PSA for newer surf anglers:

Yes, SoCal beaches absolutely have marine worms you can collect yourself. No, you do not need to buy every bait in a blister pack from the tackle shop.

Same logic as buying sand crabs when they’re literally in the wash at your feet…

Sand crabs, worms, mussels, ghost shrimp (where legal), grunion matching, etc….the surf is basically a bait shop if you know how to read it.

“Match the hatch” isn’t just a fly fishing phrase.

Who’s targeting what right now?

sand crabs = perch/croaker/corbina

worms = perch/croaker/spotfin/yfc/ANYTHING

grunion profile = halibut/WSB/stripers where they show

Not trying to start a fight, just trying to save folks time and money…

Which hatch to match?

Do you match the sand crabs and target the usual suspects; perch, croaker, corbina?
Or throw a grunion profile and swing for halibut, stripers, maybe even WSB? Sandcrab beds have finally showed up (still small up here, but plentiful), and the last grunion run is tonight

Fires burning, Santa Ana winds blowing….What gets first cast at dawn?

Went down this morning, grass and debris are minimal, I fished the negative tide at dawn, water is a warm feeling 66 degrees, and the water was mirror like and waves negligible…if you can figure out what the fish are eating let us know lol, I went home with a skunk after tossing a camo 2” hammer tail swim bait on a Carolina rig (18” leader with 3/4 oz egg and bead and a size 4 red hook)

Just wanted to share this pitcher because I’m honestly blown away by how it turned out. The deep red with those speckles and the striping along the wing looks insane in person.

This is growing indoors in Malibu (coastal light), getting bright indirect with some soft morning sun. Humidity is whatever the room gives me—nothing crazy—and I haven’t done anything special besides keeping the soil consistently moist and using distilled water.

A couple questions for you all:

- Is this level of coloration typical for this type, or is it getting pushed by the light?

-The peristome is starting to get nice and defined, will it darken even more as it matures?

- Anything I should tweak to encourage bigger pitchers like this consistently?

Also… I didn’t expect it to look this aggressive 😂
Would love any feedback or tips—still pretty new to Nepenthes but fully hooked now

Been off doing other things ocean related for the past few weeks as conditions have been less than ideal for surf fishing to say the least… finally got inspired when I woke up this morning to a proper lake where the pacific used to be…decided to carry a proper set up on my dog walk this morning hit the sand at 8 am at +2.6. and first cast hooked into a chunky YFC. I saw some mystery schools fish of a large variety 200 yards offshore breaching water, maybe stripers or WSB? Ended up walking with the current and while the water was completely still for the most part and surf nonexistent there was quite a bit of debris in the water so if you’re thinking about the hard bait, bring it back up just in case the beach, you’re at gathers a lot of debris. Saturday conditions look IDEAL for halibut and reef fish if you know what time works at your beach, marine layer is in and there is no breeze to speak of…might rip a clouser for halibut or Corbina before sundown (on the fly rod lol). If conditions are like yesterday, the wind will pick up at sunset and then completely die off as the sun disappears below the horizon…fish are in thick judging by birds, it’s all about getting your lure to where the fish are, and with no current for the next 36 hours, it should be a finesse fisherman’s playground…tight lines 🙌🏼🌞🤙🏻🏝️
