UAE Business Owners: are the networking events actually working for you?

Genuine question for the business owners here in UAE.

I've been to 10 or 12 networking events in the last few months and I'm starting to think the whole format is broken.

Every event runs the same playbook. A panel of 5 or 6 "speakers" on stage, mostly people running their own companies or hawking their own services. The hour is spent listening to them tell their origin story, plug their product, and explain why they're impressive. You sit in the audience clapping like a clown.

Then comes the "networking" part. People walk up, hand you their business card before they've even said their name, and walk off. No introduction, no question about what you do, no conversation. This is my card! On to the next person now.

By event 6 or 7 I thought it was me being too critical. By event 12 I'm sure it isn't. These aren't networking events. They're audience acquisition events for whoever sponsored the room. The attendees aren't there to meet each other. They're warm bodies the organizers needed to justify the venue.

Maybe I've been going to the wrong rooms. So I want to ask:

Where in Dubai do you actually talk to other business owners without a panel in the way?

Are there smaller, invite-only or dinner-format meetups that actually work?

Idk if my rant is justified or not but this whole situation is not helping any business owner.

Genuinely asking. Tired of leaving every event with a stack of business cards from people I never spoke to.

Sanity check from SME owners, and from any e-invoicing vendors willing to be transparent.

I run ops for a trading firm. Over the AED 50M threshold, around 3,000 to 3,500 invoices a month, B2B, on Tally today. We have to appoint an ASP by July 31. Started shopping for vendors three weeks ago.

What it has actually looked like:

One vendor wants me to fill a 24-question "Information Requirement List" before sending any pricing. I submitted it two weeks ago. Still no number.

Another vendor quoted north of AED 200K for Year 1. AED 90K of that was tax assessment and "change management" before any software actually goes live. When I asked what the platform itself does that costs that much to set up, the answers got vague.

A third needed a video call before sharing anything. After the call they sent a partnership template that had nothing to do with what I'm trying to buy. Instead they were just charging sh*t load for just consultation.

I keep being told this is just how UAE B2B procurement works. I've also been told the real all-in cost for our size should sit somewhere between AED 30K and AED 80K a year, not AED 200K plus. Genuinely don't know what's true.

2 quick questions:

SMEs who already picked a vendor: what did you pay all-in (implementation + first year)? Rough business size and invoice volume? Order of magnitude is fine.

Vendors reading this: why does almost nobody publish pricing? If you're an exception, drop your headline number below. Whoever gives a straight answer first probably wins this deal.

If anyone has a provider that quoted them cleanly without 5 calls and a 24-question form, name them. Saves the rest of us weeks.

TIA
