I'm 47 years old and got laid off while I was in the middle of a trip. I feel like I'm about to fall apart. Any advice would mean a lot to me.
I'm 47 years old, married, and I have 3 kids and a mortgage and all of that. After working for almost 15 years as a software QA manager, I found out a few days ago, while I was traveling with my family, that I'm going to be laid off. The company is moving the entire QA team overseas. They offered me a "bonus" if I stay with them for another 10 weeks to help train the people who will take my place.
I know I'm supposed to be grateful that I have a little extra time to figure things out, and I really am, but I'm sitting here staring at the ceiling, thinking about my family, stressed out and absolutely terrified. My wife's income is very low, so most of the responsibility is on me. Honestly, I feel like I'm on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
I don't even know what the first step should be. Update my resume? Start applying now? Talk to a recruiter? I'm terrified and trying not to let it show in front of my family. Any advice, guidance, or even a few words from people who have been through this would be very much appreciated.
