Ranking America's best vanilla bean

A while ago I got injured and had to stay home for a while. I couldn’t really train or be active, so naturally I started getting cravings.

One day I ordered Häagen-Dazs from the grocery store and they accidentally gave me Vanilla Bean instead of regular vanilla. I took one bite and genuinely said, “Holy shit.”

It was like that scene in Ratatouille where Remy eats the strawberry with the cheese and fireworks start going off in his head.

From that day on, I was eating a pint almost every day. Then I thought to myself:

"If grocery-store Häagen-Dazs is this good… surely there’s something even better out there."

So during my recovery, I made it my mission to find the greatest vanilla bean ice cream in America.

I’m writing this on the Fourth of July while fireworks are going off outside, and it reminded me of that Ratatouille scene.

People need to know.

They deserve to know.

It is their constitutional right to know.

Ranking is based on overall enjoyment (taste, texture, ingredients, and whether I’d actually buy it again).

1. Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Bean — 10/10 👑

The King.

There is simply no beating King Daz. Rich, dense, creamy, sweet, perfectly balanced. Somehow they absolutely nailed the recipe, and I honestly don’t know why nobody has managed to copy it.

This is the benchmark.

2. McConnell’s Golden State Vanilla — 9/10

Important: Golden State Vanilla, NOT the regular Vanilla Bean.

This is phenomenal. Simple ingredient list, organic dairy, incredibly creamy, and honestly the closest anyone came to knocking King Daz off the throne.

3. Van Leeuwen French Vanilla — 7.5/10

Really good. The complexity is there and it’s clearly high quality. My only complaint is that it feels a little lighter and airier. It just doesn’t have that dense, luxurious punch that Häagen-Dazs has.

4. Alec’s Vanilla Bean — 7/10

Very different from the others, but I actually liked it. Great texture, clean organic ingredients, and a unique flavor.

This one is very subjective. You’re either going to love it or hate it.

5. Straus Vanilla Bean — 6/10

Excellent ingredients and organic dairy, but this is where the dramatic drop from the top three starts.

If this were the World Cup, the top three make the knockout stage. Everyone after this is getting eliminated in the group stage.

6. Adirondack Vanilla — 6/10

The flavor is there, but the texture isn’t. They use milk powder and, weirdly enough, I could actually taste it. It wasn’t as smooth as the others.

(Their Dates & Walnuts flavor is actually worth trying.)

7. Jeni’s Honey Vanilla Bean — 4.5/10

Not for me.

It tasted more like birthday cake than vanilla bean, and the honey completely took over. I know people love Jeni’s, but this flavor just wasn’t it.

8. Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla — 4/10

Taste-wise, this honestly would’ve ranked around fourth or fifth.

But then I looked at the ingredient list...

Yeah, I couldn’t do it.

9. Graeter’s Vanilla Bean — 4/10

Nothing particularly memorable. It had a slightly waxy finish that reminded me of regular McConnell’s Vanilla Bean.

10. McConnell’s Vanilla Bean — 3/10

I genuinely don’t understand this one.

It tasted like candle wax.

11. Tillamook Old-Fashioned Vanilla — 3/10

Economy class on a plane.

It’s not offensive, but after trying the top brands it just feels light, airy, and forgettable. It never delivers that rich, dense, luxurious texture I’m looking for.

I’d rather spend the extra few dollars and fly with King Daz.

If anyone has a recommendation that can actually beat King Daz, I’m willing to sacrifice my waistline one last time for science.
