Solo living is also for retired professionals or widows and widowers

Most narratives about solo living deal with young professionals working from home or venturing out in the city, Makati or BGC perhaps. But there are old, retired professionals who also live solo, usually not by choice but by major life events, like a husband has passed away.

I am 76F and my only son resides in the U.S. After my husband passed away last year, my move to the city was inevitable. I sold our beautiful house with a gorgeous garden in the province and shipped my essential household stuff. Luckily, we have a condo unit in Makati. After more than three months of condo renovation, I moved in to my new space. I live alone and the clueless and busybodies often ask, “Bakit wala kang kasama? Kaya mong mag-isa?” To these I reply, “Bakit hindi?”

Once a week, I volunteer at the Union Church of Manila (UCM) library. I arrange books alphabetically using the Dewey Decimal System or I glue borrower’s card envelopes at the back of books. The library has tons of books for adults and children alike. It is open to the public.
