An annual event, our local National Night Out event is a free, family-friendly event that allows the community to meet and learn about our area law enforcement agencies and programs. Hosted by SVPD, there is always a wide variety of area public safety agencies, community groups, and organizations will share information, offer demonstrations, and host activities at the event.

Sales of hot dogs, chips, and drinks will benefit local Christmas with a Cop programs that benefits children in our community.

The City of Sierra Vista has officially renewed its partnership with the University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) for the fourth consecutive year to power the UACI Sponsored Launch Program.

This collaborative initiative provides a unique opportunity for science and technology startups in Southeastern Arizona to scale their operations, commercialize breakthrough ideas, and contribute directly to regional economic development.

The selected startup will receive one year of sponsored admission to UACI’s world-class incubator network, gaining full access to UACI’s proven incubation program, customized mentoring, and specialized office or laboratory space. Founders will be guided by the UACI Program Roadmap, a comprehensive framework that helps entrepreneurs navigate critical business milestones from initial market validation and business model development to successful fundraising and scaling.

To be eligible, startup teams must be located or operating within the City of Sierra Vista or Southeastern Arizona, or directly benefit the area. Applicants must be developing an innovative science or technology solution that addresses a significant business or societal challenge, and they must demonstrate a strong commitment to building a scalable business model with a lasting impact.

Applications must be submitted by Friday, October 30.

The Arizona Secretary of State's Office has a website for folks who vote via early ballot, where you can track your ballot, and now it has the additional option of giving you real-time updates via text message and/or email (you get to choose) for when your ballot is sent out, when it's returned and received by our county recorder and if it's been accepted and signature verified.

Just a reminder that early ballots will be sent out on October 7th.

The last day to register to vote in the November 3rd election is October 5, 2026, at 11:59pm.

WHEN: Saturday, October 24 | 5 – 7 p.m.

COST: Free, ages 9-13

Join us at the library after hours for a live-action version of the popular social deception game Among Us. Players will randomly draw roles as crewmates or impostors. Crewmates will work to complete quick, simple tasks around the library while avoiding elimination. Imposters try to sabotage and eliminate players without being caught. Multiple rounds will be played as time allows.

Registration is required. Sign up online.

In case you aren't aware, several of the local services & the city offer rebates for energy efficient changes in your home.

Southwest Gas gives rebates for appliances in your home that use gas. Here is the list to see if your appliance qualifies and what you need to do.

City of Sierra Vista gives a rebate when you install an EPA WaterSense-approved toilet for active SV residential sewer customers. More information and the application form can be found here.

Liberty Water also offers a High Efficiency Toilet Rebate. More information and the application form can be found here.

SSVEC gives rebates for both hot water heaters and heat pumps. More information can be found here.

The State also has a rebate program for qualified households to install highly efficient appliances and HVAC equipment. You can find more information and how to apply here.

An important tenet of community is participating in the upkeep of said community. Now, while I'm big about volunteering for organizations that do clean-up in public spaces, like our City's Adopt an Area or Arizona's Adopt a Highway, I do know those organizations don't cover everywhere, especially the wide swaths of open spaces throughout our town that are routinely used as dumpsites.

And these places are not only an eyesore but create hazards to people who come across these sites and potentially into the ground, which can, depending on where it is, impact the San Pedro aquifer we depend on (yes, I know, giant nerd). So it's important that we know what to do when we see these things.

Did you know that you can report issues like illegal dumping to the City Code Enforcement?

They respond to complaints, inspect sites, issue citations, and perform other code compliance efforts. Common code violations include overgrowth, litter and debris, junk vehicles, illegal dumping, blocked sidewalks (by a vehicle, basketball hoop, etc.), and working without a permit.

RESIDENTIAL TRASH OPTIONS

SPECIAL PICKUPS:
The City provides a Special Pickup sticker for $50 good for one pick up for bulky items or items that are bagged or bundled and cannot exceed 4' x 6' x 3' or a 2.5 cubic yard load. Note: You will need a separate sticker for each item that meets the size requirement and any request for pick up of items like fridges or freezers are required to have Freon professionally removed.

Stickers can be purchased at City Hall, Pedro Castro Maintenance Center, the Oscar Yrun Community Center or the Cove, and you'll call Public Works for pick up: (520) 458-5775. (info)

DUMPSTER RENTAL:
Residential customers in the city limits can rent a 3-cubic yard dumpster for 30 days. I think it cost $150 the last time I did it. You can keep it for longer and even get it dumped between 30 day periods. The dump is included in the monthly cost. So if you want the dumpster for 60 days, you'll pay $300 with a dump in there. This information is valid as of my last use in January.

You have to be a City Waste customer, but you can email at Utilities@SierraVistaAZ.gov or call (520) 458-3315. It's never taken longer than a week, and they've always dropped it where I've wanted. (info)

GREEN WASTE & COMPOST
The City has a green waste & compost program, too. You can drop off your green waste, or have it picked up. The service is free for City Waste customers. You will need to present a sanitation bill to avoid the fee. Otherwise there's a $15/pickup truck load and $2 for each additional cubic yard.

You can also buy compost and mulch, and city staff will load your compost into a pickup bed or trailer. All the info you need is here.

For 25 years, the doors of My Place Restaurant have opened to the Sierra Vista community nearly every day. Sadly, the family has now shared the heartbreaking reason those doors have recently been closed.

Alex shared that their mother was taken to the emergency room on August 15 after experiencing difficulty breathing. Doctors discovered she has Stage IV neuroendocrine carcinoma, a rare, aggressive and fast-growing cancer. Her oncologist has given the family an optimistic prognosis of only one to two months. She is currently in Tucson receiving in-home hospice care.

Alex has also confirmed that My Place Restaurant will not be reopening."

We often have, but don't support, independent bookstores in Sierra Vista. This is the fourth one (thanks, u/pogotross, for the correction!) in this location, and part of the issue is the location, but the other part is that whenever there's an author/book event, people either don't know about it or simply don't attend.

I'm guilty, and I'm an author!

So I made a point to visit them on Saturday, when I hit up The Toy Fort, and I'm glad I did!

Not only did I get to meet this cutie pie once I came into the door, I spent some time talking to the owner, James Becker, about books, the obstacles that come with being an independent bookstore in a small place, and overall, how to build a stronger relationship between the community and the store.

They carry a wide inventory of used books with a historical focus on our area, but they also carry books on so many other things, like the outdoors, Sherlock Holmes, aliens, Terry Pratchett--Hubby even grabbed a Dune book there. And if you're looking for something specific, they're pretty good at finding them.

They have done author events, like book signings, in the past, and they're open to hosting more in the future. They also have events in Tombstone with a focus on Western authors.

They're just working out how to get more folks through the door.

And we can help with that.

So pop in to say hello. Let your friends and family know they exist and where they are, won't you? And ofc, you know I'll let you know when they have their next author event!

This is right by the first door. Where's R2D2 or Chopper when you need them? Oh, wait, I see the door knob...

You can see from the top photo what the front/main part of the store looks like, and there is soooo much Star Wars stuff... oh, and other stuff, too. 😆 Lots of GI Joe, Gundam, Transformers, Pokemon cards (singles and packs, I think), some anime, vintage 80s toys, and sooo much more.

And they do buy things, too. Right now, they're looking for:

pokemon cards, transformers, 80s star wars toys, my little pony, littlest pet shop, monster high dolls, gundam kits (unbuilts, anime statues, clone figures from star wars

The staff was so nice and welcoming, and while we didn't have questions, I overheard them answering questions for other customers. They were very knowledgeable, too, which I always love. Clearly nerds working for nerds!

What we left with, bc Hubby said I wasn't allowed to buy all the Star Wars figures

We'll be going back to do our holiday shopping, sure, but we'll be back before then, too.

2026 marks the 31st Annual Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony happening Wednesday, November 11. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and will run along Fry Boulevard from 7th Street to Jean Randle Way. Fry Boulevard will be closed from 7th Street to Avenida Escuela from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A ceremony will be held in Veterans Memorial Park following the parade. To access the park for the ceremony, please use the north entrance.
