Slash Pile Burn | Aug 8 - 21, 2026

Slash Pile Burn | Aug 8 - 21, 2026

https://preview.redd.it/0vvcra6v26kh1.png?width=1570&format=png&auto=webp&s=368c9e5e7373b2850e0dfa132465a0d7360a9871

From the US Army Fort Huachuca FB post

"ALERT Fort Huachuca in conjunction with Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management will continue slash pile burning beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, through Friday, Aug. 21, dependent on weather, in the back of Split Rock Canyon (map attached).

Toward the end of the week, they should complete the Split Rock burning and start burning in Tinker Canyon (map attached) on the south range next to the perimeter fence.

Smoke will be visible most of the day but should have very minimal impacts to Fort Huachuca or Sierra Vista. No powerlines or structures will be threatened. Slash pile burns will continue throughout the month of August with weekly notifications."

----------------------------------------------------------------

For anyone wondering why we do slash pile burning during the summer, my understanding is that it's meant to remove old, dead undergrowth and other potential debris that can possibly fuel fire during our drier winter months.

As always, these are informational posts, and I don't have any additional information. If I do find any, I will update this post.

Bella Vista Neighborhood Sector Plan Input | City News

From the City email:

The City of Sierra Vista is seeking resident feedback on its Bella Vista Neighborhood Sector Examination plan.

The City, in partnership with the Neighborhoods Commission, has begun working with local residents to create a series of online interactive maps and supporting plan documents for the City’s residential neighborhoods. These maps and plans are meant to make it easier for people to find information about current conditions and future development in the City’s neighborhoods, subdivisions, and commercial areas. The first area being covered is the Bella Vista Neighborhood Sector.

The City held a meeting on March 30, 2026, to show the online web app and gather residents’ feedback about the neighborhood’s current conditions and future growth. After that meeting, City staff put together a plan document that includes the community’s input along with earlier analysis of the area. The plan also lays out goals for future policy, operations, and development.

The City is now asking for more feedback on this supplemental plan, especially on the goals for the future, because it’s important that the next steps reflect the community’s needs and ideas.

“To truly understand the current strengths and challenges of any given neighborhood, the best course of action is to ask the experts: the people who live and work there each day,” Sierra Vista Community Development Director Matt McLachlan says.

Residents can review the plan and offer feedback online by visiting Engage.SierraVistaAZ.gov. Residents can also learn more and offer comments in person at a public meeting on Friday, July 31, at 5:30 p.m. inside the Sierra Vista Public Library’s large meeting room.

Comments have been locked as this is an informational post only.

For more information or assistance, contact the Community Development Department at (520) 417-4413 or Planning@SierraVistaAZ.gov.

Hummingbird Triathlon 2026 | August 15, 2026

UPDATE: I updated the link below, but just in case it doesn't work for whatever reason, here it is: https://www.active.com/sierra-vista-az/triathlon/races/hummingbird-triathlon-2026

The 25th Annual Hummingbird Triathlon will be on Saturday, Aug. 15, starting at 7 a.m., and it begins and ends at The Cove.

The event includes a 400-yard swim, a 13-mile bike ride, and a 5k run. You can compete as an individual, or a member of a team. Teams can be all male, female, or coed. This is a chip-timed race, which I learned means that the participants wear an RFDI chip on their person that tracks exactly when they cross the lines.

This event is open to ages 10 and up.

Registration is done through this link. If you register early, you can save money on the entry fee guarantee your event T-shirt and swag from their sponsors.

Good luck!

Fireworks in the City | Information

All the following information is from the City of Sierra Vista email I receive. If you’d like to stay updated, you can sign up for these email here. For more information about events going on that weekend, you can check out this post.

The City reminds its residents that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend the display at the City Sports Complex on E. Tacoma St. or from Veterans Memorial Park.

FIREWORKS AT HOME

If you decide to have fireworks at home, there are legal and illegal types you can use.

ILLEGAL FIREWORKS: Bottle rockets, skyrockets, roman candles, helicopters, and jumping jacks. These are illegal throughout the state of Arizona.

LEGAL FIREWORKS: Cylindrical and cone fountains, ground spinners, illuminating torches, and other types designed to be handheld or to remain on the ground.

Please ensure you have a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of emergency.

Also, no one under the age of 18 is allowed to use fireworks unsupervised, especially small children. This includes igniting and playing with fireworks. Just a reminder that sparklers, while pretty and fun, burn at temperatures around 2000° degrees and can cause severe injury.

OUTDOOR CARE

Don’t forget! As of right now, the weather will have highs in the mid-90s and lows in the mid 60s. So if you’ll be wandering around outdoors, please make sure to wear appropriate clothing--including hats!--and sunscreen (don’t forget to reapply!).

And stay hydrated!

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE

Not everyone’s pets love the heat, large crowds and loud noises. These experiences can cause pets, especially dogs, to panic and potentially run away and get lost. And since the City doesn’t allow pets at any of the weekend events at Veterans Memorial Park except the Pets and People Promenade on Saturday morning from 7-9am, be sure to leave them safely at home.

Make sure your outdoor dogs have sufficient shade and water.

REMEMBER YOUR NEIGHBORS

This is a me note.
Please be courteous to your neighbors.

This doesn’t mean you can’t set off fireworks the Fourth of July weekend--though if you live in an apartment complex, check the complex rules first, given the size of open areas and the higher chance of accidents and incidents--but please don’t be that person setting off fireworks at 2am for the next two weeks.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, FOLKS!

Another Bomb Threat - June 24 - 11:14AM | INFORMATIONAL

By the time most of you see this, hopefully it will be resolved

https://preview.redd.it/1euko1d3v99h1.png?width=765&format=png&auto=webp&s=f33f1e3d97e63e067f723c140d80db1bfa11ad93

Update per CoolFMOnline's FB page:

"**UPDATE (10:41 a.m.) The Cove Aquatic Center and Veterans Memorial Park have been cleared and are now open to the public. Please avoid all other City parks and sports fields until further notice as this bomb threat is investigated.**

They're a great resource for information about local events. You can stay updated about this one here.

************************************

Per the SV Herald article about the original report:

"SIERRA VISTA — Sierra Vista police are investigating a bomb threat made Wednesday morning that prompted officials to restrict access to city parks, sports fields and recreational facilities while officers conducted searches.

In a public advisory issued Wednesday, the Sierra Vista Police Department urged residents to avoid city parks and sports fields until further notice as officers investigated the threat. Police also asked residents to report any suspicious activity observed at city parks or recreational facilities by calling 911.

Authorities said residents could expect an increased police presence at parks and recreational facilities throughout the city and warned that access would be limited during the investigation. The advisory initially included The Cove Aquatic Center among the affected facilities."

Read more here as they update. (I used the 'gift article' link, so there should be no paywall)
