Apartment without electricity, what to do? Do I have to pay full rent or not?
Hi all! I'd like some suggestions/tips on how to deal with our current situation.. We moved to the US recently so it's kind of hard to navigate things at times.
So basically it's now been almost 3 months that we've had no electricity in our unit. This has started on February 24th when there was a fault in the system and the electricity just went off. The landlord has since been very nice: he provided an outside cable through the door (such that we could connect fridge, internet and like a lamp) and has been updating us promptly as it seems a kind of a big job to get this fixed.
He said that at first he had to prepare a working plan to be submitted to some Santa Monica planning authority and that then, after this is approved, his electrician can start working, otherwise he could get fined. So this is why this is taking long: 1 month to prepare this plan (submitted about two months ago) and now we wait.. he said it's not up to him anymore and that the city has to approve this which can take some time. What should we do on the rent? Are we entitled some credit or even to not pay it? Even though there's this cable that keeps the fridge and some other appliances on, it's starting to feel a bit hard at this point and we're not even sure the thing will get sorted soon. So how to approach this, what are our rights? I'd like to keep things peaceful but also this is becoming tough. Thank you to anyone willing to advise :)
