Hiking Mount Etna's upper slopes, Sicily (~3,200m) — snow still on the summit cones in spring

Taken on the upper slopes of Etna at around 3,200m. You reach this area from the north side via 4x4, and thenon foot . The ground is all loose lava scoria, and even in late spring there's still snow on the summit cones behind. Above ~3,200m a certified guide is required, hence the helmets. One of the most surreal landscapes I've walked — black rock, snow and blue sky all at once.

Mount Etna — Effusive Phase, North Flank | 28 June 2026, Sicily

North flank of Etna, 28 June 2026 — effusive phase, with lava feeding a slow flow through the night. Up there with certified guides at the regulated safe distance. The glow lit up the whole sky.

Etna putting on a show today, shot this a couple of hours ago

"Caught some days ago from Etna north side at 3000 meters. The effusive mouth has been active lately — never gets used to living next to this. Happy to answer questions if anyone's planning a trip."
