Evidence of Upwork's Crimes

There was a commenter who claimed to be an Upwork (or former, not sure now) employee that had knowledge of Upwork creating fake jobs and that it was a scam site. This is significant for me because this is the first time I have seen or even heard of anyone even claiming to be an employee saying this.

I have my doubts, but I am going to treat this as serious. Because the commenter deleted their comments I want to encourage others to come forward.

Now, I believe this conspiracy theory is silly for a lot of really good reasons but I am willing to listen. I would also tell this person or anyone else that you are protected under US law for whistleblowing and you might even be eligible for financial awards (if you are in the US). So there is NO reason to not come forward with evidence.

This would be fraud on a massive scale and should be dealt with if it is at all true.

It doesn't matter if 150 people proposed, you already sent that proposal

The thing about Upwork's insight feature is it provides no valuable information to you. You already sent a proposal, you already spent the money, you can unscrew that particular light bulb.

But if you see that 150 people sent a proposal on the job you proposed on and you think that means you have a 1 in 150 shot of winning that job (or you think even less), then you should stop using Upwork.

I am not trying to be mean to you, I am trying to save you money and time and anguish. If you do not think the proposal you send is in any way ever going to distinguish you from the other 149 people then don't send it. If there is nothing you can at least pretend is unique about the service you provide then you will only get by on luck.

Upwork changed the UI again

Get ready for the complaint apocalypse.

I have to say for a site that is dead it sure does get a lot of complaints when they change things.

Upwork is Dead Megathread

Every Sunday we will have a new Megathread for people to discuss the state of Upwork and debate the extent of its death. We will direct future posts about this topic to that thread.

Boosting Board Photos

From now on if you are posting a picture of a boosts you need to include the job link that the photo goes with. Without the job link, the discussion is mostly pointless. With it then maybe we can start to understand why some people, on some jobs, think they are worth massive boosts.

Delete Saved Searches

I am adding in some new Saved Searches and I want to delete one I added accidentally and an old one and I cannot figure out in the new interface how to do it. Has anyone figured this out?

A Tale of Some Not So Fake Jobs

I want to preface this by saying that I know there are jobs that are put out by clients (to use the term loosely) that have no intention of ever hiring. But I want to tell this story to give you an example of how what is going on is not always that.

I started talking to a client in January on a job post. I was the only person they ever interviewed by the stats.

The nothing has happened for months.

Then after a round of recent discussions we decided to do a quick job to review some things to do a better estimate on the work to be done.

So, they created a new job for that.

But they also hired me directly from my profile.

I contacted them as soon as I noticed the other job show up in my Best Matches and they closed it pretty quickly. The job was pretty obvious that they were looking to hire someone they had already talked to but I am sure the autobots proposed on it if not others.

So that is two jobs created where it looks like nobody was ever hired. Did Upwork profit from all of them? Sure. I even proposed on the wrong job just as an added way to contact them to tell them to close the job so I lost connects on that. But the point remains, this client had every intention of hiring it just didn't happen under either job they posted. The next part, if we go forward, won't be on a job they posted (hopefully).

Hey r/UpworkOfficial,

We just launched Upwork Updates Spring 2026, our biannual product release bundling the latest features and improvements across the platform. Here’s a quick breakdown on what’s changing.

A lot of this is focused on improving hiring flow, but it impacts how freelancers get discovered too.

  • Work history summaries – A freelancer’s most relevant past work on Upwork now gets pulled into a summary on your profile, so clients can evaluate your experience faster. It updates dynamically based on what clients are searching for or what’s in their job post, so the most relevant work history appears first.
  • ChatGPT discovery – Clients can now discover freelancers, directly inside ChatGPT, after they describe their project needs - you can see our post about that here
  • Contract generator – During Upwork video meetings, Uma, Upwork’s AI work agent, captures key details from the conversation that can be used to guide the development of a contract
  • Homepage redesign – A redesigned homepage that surfaces in-demand skills and roles based on marketplace trends
  • Shortlisting –  Previously available on Business Plus, shortlisting is now available on the Basic plan, delivering a curated list of top candidates within six hours of posting your job
  • Work diary summaries – Daily and weekly summaries of hourly project activity for Business Plus subscribers

You can more about the latests update here.

These updates are focused on making the platform work better for everyone – let us know what you think or drop any questions below.
