Algeria Knocked out of World Cup by Switzerland 2-0

The last time the US hosted the World Cup was 32 years ago, so it might be a long time before the Algerian national team returns to Lawrence but it was fun hosting them.

Communist Running for Legislative Seat to Represent Lawrence

Received a political campaign card today from TJ Campsey who is running for the legislature. It says he is a Communist and a member of the Communist Party, USA. The problem is Communism failed both economically and politically. There are only five Communist countries remaining in the world for a reason. It does work at the grassroots level such as with the Hutterite and Bruderhof communities. He is running in the Democratic primary against Rep. Suzanne Wikle who represents the 10th district and is progressive and doing a credible job.

Ordained Minister of Church of the Dude Married My Two Friends

"In Kansas, authorized officiants include ordained clergy, licensed religious officials, judges, and the couple themselves. The state does not require officiants to register with any government office before performing a ceremony, though they must sign the completed marriage license and return it within 10 days."

It's easy to marry people in Kansas because in the Wild West frontier days there weren't many pastors available. Also, Kansas is one of the few states that allow common law marriage. A couple over 18 merely live together and hold themselves out as married (proof is a joint bank account or joint tax form). They sign an affidavit of marriage to present to government officials when requested.

Due to funding cuts enacted with last year's Big, Beautiful Bill, an estimated 602 Douglas County residents have lost their SNAP benefits. About 300 of these are children. More are expected to lose benefits due to new restrictions imposed on recipients by the administration. These people will be going to food pantries such as Just Food. Support them if you can.

Littering Down 34% in Last Five Years

This is a national figure but probably applies to Lawrence as the City adopted a ban on plastic bags during this time.. No one knows why littering is down. Could be educational campaigns or demographics. Remember: there's a solution to pollution!

World Cup in Kansas City a Bust

Hotel bookings are below normal for June and July. Apparently, many international soccer fans have decided not to go to Kansas City. There may be some last-minute bookings from soccer fans living in the US if match ticket prices drop but high gas prices might limit this. Originally, event planners were predicting 650,000 visitors. https://www.kshb.com/sports/world-cup/kansas-city-hotel-bookings-for-world-cup-lag-visit-kc-expects-late-surge

SpringHill Suites at Riverfront to Close

Due to structural damage to 10% of the rooms, the hotel will vacate the premises within a year according to a legal settlement. The contractors (or their insurance) for stabilizing the riverbank will pay about $2.2 million because their activities damaged the building. The City will pay over $300,000 but take ownership over the building (it already owns the land). Some City offices are already in the building.
