Do you remember the drama 春日艳火 | Blazing Spring with his co-star Zhang Yi Lin?

The plot: she is forced to seduce him by her scumbag dad and WHZ unfortunately hears her discussing her schemes with her friend. Busted.

So when she’s pursued by his cousin, she goes along to get closer and to look if he gets jealous.

It was released in May 2025 and it’s not my favorite drama in this year.

It has some memorable scenes though.

One: A kiss in these hot springs - his demeanor towards her is icy but his possessive nature wins out.

Two: there’s a love confession planned by said cousin, this breaks down his walls, he sabotages the arrangement, drags her away and … yep. Wall slam. Goosebumps. His Yandere nature says „hi“

Great scenes.

So if you missed it in 2025, go have a look. It’s honestly better than some of his mediocre 2026 dramas.

He’s looking at you like you’re his favorite food. This cannot be good for your health.

What would you do?

A: Keep on dressing his wound and then run like hell—away from temptation.

B: You ask if he has any other wounds that need TLC.

C: He’s a total green tea and deserves some payback. So you coo, bat your eyelashes and sit in his lap to finish dressing his wound. Let’s see who runs first.

D: You say, “Temptation, here I come!” & ask him to repair your kitchen table. After.

I’m not cool enough to employ any of these strategies. I’d just stutter, clumsily drop the bandage and blush.

It’s the second drama in the last TT

📖 The Story

Lin Qingmiao carries a hidden identity because of her family’s dark past. She crosses paths with Zhou Jin, a rough-around-the-edges driver who seems down on his luck.
They’ve met before. She recognizes a striking likeness, but can’t believe it’s him. Him doing a blue-collar job?
Both are not who they claim to be. False names, changed cities, changed professions—all wrong. Their lives are connected through crime. His mother was murdered and he wants to find out the truth. And her father is a convicted murderer and she runs away from the social stigma. 
This is Part 1, and the story is far from over. But the setting is going to change: they meet as lawyers. I hope it’ll come out soon. 

👤 Zhou Jin / Zhou Yechun — The ML

It’s a grittier Dai Gaozheng than the usual polished CEO. He’s working as truck driver. How he carries huge water bottles in his first moment on screen—   rather enhanced by carefully placed smut on his biceps— it’s memorable. Though he’s not a CEO, he’s a classic: cold outside - warm inside. A leopard can’t hide his spots. 
It’s a drama that asks you to watch and connect the dots. In time you see part of the puzzle. His truck driver job? He ran from home and needs money.
His intention to dig deeper in his mum’s death brought him into conflict with his father who made it impossible for him to work as a lawyer. His mum was a Supreme Court judge. So his background is definitely influential and privileged. His meet ups with a guy / lawyer friend add to the mystery.  They smoke a cigarette, exchange information, he asks for support and a resident passport for Hongkong with his chosen name and prepares to work as a lawyer again.
For everyone else he’s a hot truck driver who sends his female admirers packing. But he’s a man limited in his effectiveness through his father’s interference. He’s not happy. 

💭 My Thoughts

Hongkong, Cantonese and camera work are huge assets of this drama. It‘s very atmospheric and DGZ in tank tops isn’t only pleasing to our eyes but makes sense. He’s working physically in a hot climate. 
Yes, Wang Gege is styled frumpy, but her life is hard and attention is something she fears. So „there’s nothing to see“ hair and clothes are her protection. 
The plot worked. It needs your attention but it’s a well done wheels- inside- wheels story. 

🌙 Lin Qingmiao — The FL

Then he meets law student Sun Tao who works in a supermarket on his route. HK university doesn’t allow students to work- so she’s forced to hide her job. It’s the smallest of her secrets. 

Daughter of a murderer. 

She states that she put him in jail. Her mum cut ties with her; there’s not much of an explanation. So she just wants to leave her true identity behind.

She’s still harassed left and right and used to it. Her reactions are formed by her experience as a helpless teenager- just endure and leave.  When her neighbors call her a prostitute and even attack her — she just takes it. Then the ML shows up like her guardian angel, he protects her.

Against harassment by a coworker, he carries her burdens — helps her safe her stored goods against a flood, arrives timely on scene (neigbors, on-going sexual harassing) and doubles down via the law (his contacts). The pull at work. She asks him to work with her on a side hustle at a night market - he says no, but he does show up. You can watch them fall. It’s so natural both actors and their chemistry are on point. . 
Both try not to, they have secrets, false names and false identities. 
Angst is her companion, hiding and running away is second nature to her. Though she is the one approaching him at first, she’s pushing for friendship and support only. When she notices that there’s more, their roles change and now he pursues her. He seizes the chance to be her flat mate. He is actually true to his emotions — his secrets weigh heavy but they’re peripheral. He has to find a moment where he can tell her the truth without damaging her trust. It’s manageable.   

🧩 Why They Fit

They are just two young people drawn to each other and they talk, they get to know each other and don’t deny the pull.

His support helps her gain back some confidence and enables her to fight back. She’s changing his attitude — encourages him to actually stop fretting about how unfair his dad treated him and to look for a way forward.

Without the background that her father was responsible for his mother‘s death this would be a cute romance about hidden identity. But it’s layered, and the follow-up puzzle running through: how does she know his mother, know him and her father responsible for the biggest trauma in his life (and the how, where, why) adds heaviness and profound angst on her side of the equation. 

✨ Favorite Moments

When they both save a stray kitten and the caring side of both of them shows. Add the way they deal with it, how they talk it through, weigh options and share custody and you see the foundation of a good relationship. 
Their kiss in the rain, it’s so honest and emotional. And when he’s living in the apartment with her it’s fun to watch her notice that her spontaneous yes to sharing a bedroom with a male flatmate comes with  fire hazard? It’s classic subconscious at work. And he’s so sweet and respectful- enough said.

✅ Recommendation? 
Oh yes, these leads just fit. I loved the build up and following the loops of how many interconnections form this knot. And heat? It’s not about how many kisses we get, it’s the quality of the  build-up. Can’t wait for part 2!

Here is a deep dive into the reality of China's divorce laws, the public backlash, and how dramas are being used as PR.

The interesting post "So the short dramas ARE accurate" by u/WildestLifeofMine —thank you! — made me curious enough to start digging into it.

What we see on screen reflects a massive tug-of-war between real social anxieties and state policy.
Dramas about abusive husbands, terrifying mothers-in-law, unequal marriages, and women struggling to escape them were not invented in a vacuum. They reflect social fears and conflicts that already exist. But lately, we are seeing a shift in how these stories are told—and it connects directly to real-world laws and demographic panic.

1. The Reality Behind the Drama: The Divorce Obstacle Race
First of all, what we usually see in dramas is China’s notorious 30-day “cooling-off period”. It is real—but it applies only when both spouses agree to an administrative divorce. Either spouse can withdraw or simply refuse to return. The other must then go to court (PRC Civil Code, Articles 1076–1078).

In other words: if they don’t agree, a spouse has to file directly in court.

Unfortunately, China still works with the “grounds for divorce” system. It’s the invitation to air out your dirty laundry and let the state judge if it’s bad enough to grant the filing party a divorce. Recognized grounds for a divorce include domestic violence, abuse, abandonment, bigamy, serious gambling or drug addiction, and two years of separation caused by marital discord.

This is where it’s getting problematic:

The Second-Petition Trap: Courts must attempt mediation and may reject a first divorce petition if they consider the breakdown insufficiently proven. If the couple then remains separated for another year, a second petition has to be granted.

Failure to Recognize Abuse: Studies of Chinese judgments have also found that courts sometimes fail to recognize domestic violence—or treat it as an ordinary family conflict. Women can therefore be in genuine danger while attempting to leave.

In July 2023, a husband stabbed his wife to death during a meeting in the cooling-off period. In May 2024, a man in Guizhou poisoned his ten-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter during one. These incidents are of course not unique to China. Burning or throwing acid at women who try to leave, kidnapping the children, killing them—we all saw news in our own countries.

Chinese courts issued 6,351 personal-safety protection orders in 2024—an official number, but it’s China: they decide what they release. There are no reliable national statistics showing how many women or children are harmed or killed specifically during the cooling-off period or one-year waiting period.

2. The Demographic Crisis & The Push for Births
But why is China officially pro-mediation and “wait another year”? There are cultural aspects, of course. Confucian ideals. Women‘s complaints or grievances are brushed off as an “ordinary family conflict”.

The wider theory behind divorce as an obstacle race may include China’s demographic crisis and preventing divorce as a means of solving it. This is not the officially stated purpose of the cooling-off period. Officially, it is supposed to prevent “impulsive” divorce. But the wider policy direction is difficult to ignore.

Almost all Chinese children are born within marriage. Marriage is therefore promoted, while divorce is treated as a threat to family stability and, indirectly, the Chinese birth rate.

The Numbers: China recorded only 7.9 million births in 2025—17 percent fewer than in 2024 and the lowest number since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. Its population declined by another 3.4 million.

The Policy Shift: China scholar Carl Minzner warns that the old population-planning bureaucracy is being “repurposed in the service of the state’s new pronatalist goals.”
According to Simon Elegant in The Washington Post on January 31, 2026, this direction can already be seen in confirmed measures:

China replaced the one-child policy with a two-child policy in 2016 and then a three-child policy in 2021.
A national childcare allowance introduced in 2025 pays RMB 3,600 annually for each child under three, alongside tax relief, longer maternity leave and greater reimbursement of childbirth expenses. This is standard in many countries that never had a one-child policy—it can be seen as a return to an ordinary supportive attitude.

Since January 1, 2026, condoms, contraceptive pills and other birth-control products have been subjected to 13 percent VAT after losing their decades-old tax exemption. Well, that’s a return to normalcy, too—tax exemptions were a Chinese singularity. But subjectively, it still means contraception got more expensive.

3. Xi Jinping's "New Culture" and the Real-World Outcomes
Now we’re getting to less ordinary measures. Xi Jinping has called on women to cultivate a “new culture of marriage and childbearing.” Women. Not women and men. The state promotes marriage education, matchmaking and “positive views on marriage and childbearing,” including campaigns aimed at university students.
As an outcome of this shifting direction, overregulation and intrusive practices are rising:

Restricted Choices: Reuters reported that the government has called for reducing abortions performed for “non-medical purposes.” Some women have experienced increasing difficulty obtaining abortions, while men have faced new barriers to vasectomies.

Invasive Tracking: Women of childbearing age in some areas have also received intrusive calls from family-planning officials asking about their menstrual cycles and plans to have children.

Party Pressure: A leaked 2024 draft from Quanzhou urged Communist Party members and officials to lead by example by having three children. Local authorities said it was only an internal draft.

Experts are concerned that China could eventually introduce fertility targets or connect officials’ performance assessments with local birth figures—reversing the machinery once used to suppress births. Divorce only after running an obstacle course? It has to be placed inside a much larger system that promotes marriage, discourages divorce and increasingly treats women’s reproductive decisions as a matter of national policy.

4. Public Backlash & The "Last Generation"
Public reaction to the government’s aggressive pronatalist shift has included outrage, dark humour and backlash on platforms such as Weibo and Xiaohongshu.
The new VAT was quickly dubbed the “condom tax.” One popular response asked: “If I can’t afford the 13% tax on a condom, what makes the government think I can afford a 100% tax on a human child?”
Women on Xiaohongshu called the questions about their menstrual cycles creepy, invasive “grandmother behaviour” and a dystopian violation of privacy. Many noted that these calls might achieve exactly the opposite of their intent.

For the “Last Generation”—a viral counterculture term used by Chinese youths refusing to have children under stressful social conditions—reproduction has become a form of quiet protest. The recurring message is that subsidies are too small, taxes are punitive and structural changes addressing the high cost of living are absent.
Women are encouraged to have more children, while employers often regard them as expensive hiring risks because maternity leave can be generous. The immediate result may be an increased employment discrimination rather than increased fertility.
It’s weird. Could this be the start of a return to a time when women have to depend on a man as the provider because they can’t enter the job market unhindered? Is the proposed solution to the birth-rate dilemma simply: let’s go back to patriarchy?

5. How Content is Shaped: The PR Behind the Screen
And this is exactly where dramas come in to deliver what looks like great PR:

Age Pressure: “Have children early,” say elders to young FLs who are still in college.
Multiple Births: There is the loud, ongoing celebration of twins and multiple births—up to quintuplets. It is not new, but it’s continued.
The Single-Mom Fantasy: There is an increasing number of secret babies raised by single mums. They may be ostracized by their parents, but they still thrive! They don’t even know their baby daddy but manage to have a career and a supportive direct environment. This is not a common behavior in reality.
Effortless Childcare: Drama men say, “I can afford for you to stay at home,” while women make working with children look easy. Childcare? It happens in the background, and costs aren’t a topic.
Supportive In-Laws A** **nice mother-in law who tells the female lead they support her? She‘s common place in 2026.

This idealized framing is heavily enforced. In February 2026, the Cyberspace Administration of China launched a Lunar New Year campaign to remove content that “fans fears about getting married or having children.” Censors targeted “dominant CEO fantasy dramas,” social media videos highlighting mother-in-law conflicts, and posts complaining about family pressure.

So it’s not only about “quality” as in production value or well-thought-out plots. It‘s about showing what’s aligned with the government‘s goals and philosophy. There’s never just one reason—apparently, even slapfests and negative elders endanger the birth rate.
However, suppressing the dramas does not make real-world struggles disappear. Netizens circumvented keywords to complain about the “cliff-like sharp drop” in births, pointing out that hiding family conflicts online does not fix the economic realities of stagnant wages, intense 996 work culture, and high housing costs.

The drama began filming in Hengdian on June 8, 2026, and reportedly wrapped on June 13. It is now listed by Hongguo as coming soon, with reservations already exceeding two million.

This is the first micro-drama directed by Qin Ge, a producer behind the hit crime series The Knockout《狂飙》. He has said that he wants to bring his experience from long-form television into the short-drama format—strengthening the character work and smoothing over the kind of logical gaps often created by its extreme pace.

He also brought several familiar faces from The Knockout with him. Lin Jiachuan, who played Tang Xiaolong in the series, makes his micro-drama debut here as Jiang Yu’an’s father-in-law.

Yu Yin’s female-led fantasy revenge drama Strange Woman |《异女》, opposite Yang Pengcheng, premiered on Hongguo on August 25.
It entered release with only around 600,000 reservations—rather modest for one of the biggest actresses in the short-drama industry—but reportedly reached 50.69 million in first-day heat, landing at No. 2 on Hongguo’s new live-action drama chart.

She then reunited with He Congrui in Jiaojiao Enters My Inkstone Heart |《皎皎入砚心》, which was announced for August 29.

Yao Guanyu’s studio, meanwhile, announced his 2026 birthday concert Escape from the Universe |《出逃宇宙》 at the end of August. The concert will be held on September 11 at VAS centra in Beijing, with tickets released through Damai.
