40th Birthday – North Island NZ – Thank you for all the advice!

Thank you to everyone who gave advice and commented on my previous post around a month ago – Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand_travel/s/2f8nWu4Mrt

Just wanted to give an update!

We did our North Island holiday!
I turned 40 years old and celebrated the day by doing the Black Labyrinth experience at the Waitomo Caves, which included seeing the glowworms!

We did everything in our original itinerary except Whakarewarewa – The Living Māori Village and Maungawhau / Mount Eden due to the rain. We also added Te Puia and did the Te Pō Combo, as well Hamilton Gardens with the audio equipment.

Some of our highlights:
Waitomo Caves – Black Labyrinth
Rotorua – Hell’s Gate Experience
Rotorua – Te Puia – Te Pō Combo
Rotorua – Redwoods Treewalk (Night, Day & Glowworms)
Matamata – Hobbiton Evening Banquet

On the ruru (morepork): 🦉
I actually heard its calls at Hobbiton after the Evening Banquet! I also saw depictions of the ruru at the Redwoods Treewalk in Rotorua.

We also passed the Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre near Rotorua… Sanctuary Mountain sounded so interesting too!!

Sooo close, yet so far! Next time!!

There is so much to explore on the North Island that we couldn’t fit everything into just 7 days! We will definitely have to come back for another holiday!!

Thank you again to everyone who gave us advice and recommendations on my original post. It really helped us while we were there!

I’ve shared plenty more photos from our trip on my Instagram if anyone is interested! My account is private, but feel free to send me a follow request

🇳🇿 North Island Road Trip Advice for my 40th Birthday! (6–13 August 2026) 🚗🦉❄️

Hi everyone!

My partner and I will be visiting New Zealand’s North Island from 6–13 August 2026, travelling from Brisbane, Australia. We’ll be exploring the North Island by hire car.

This trip is for my 40th birthday. My partner celebrated his 40th birthday exploring New Zealand’s South Island, so for mine I decided we’d experience the North Island together.

I visited the North Island once with my father back in 2000 when I was 14, so I don’t remember much. This will be my partner’s first visit to the North Island.

We’ve already booked and paid for our major experiences, so we’re mainly looking for local knowledge, hidden gems and practical tips that fit around our existing itinerary rather than suggestions to completely change it.

If anyone has recently travelled a similar route—or happens to be travelling around the North Island during early August 2026—we’d love to hear your experiences!

We’d love your advice on:

1. Local knowledge & hidden gems
Do you have any favourite cafés, bakeries, restaurants, scenic lookouts, short walks or lesser-known places near the towns we’re visiting?

We’re especially interested in recommendations that locals love and that visitors might easily overlook.

2. Driving advice
Are there any important differences between driving in Queensland, Australia and the North Island that we should know about?

We’ll be travelling from Auckland to Waitomo and noticed there are several possible routes and towns along the way.

Is there a route you’d particularly recommend?
Are there any worthwhile towns or scenic stops along the way?

Are wildlife or livestock on the roads something we should be mindful of, particularly around dawn, dusk or at night?

🦉🌿 3. Native wildlife, flora & landscapes
What native birds, wildlife, forests, plants or landscapes should we keep an eye out for throughout our trip?

I’d absolutely love to see or hear a morepork (ruru) while we’re there! 🦉

Are there any locations along our itinerary where we’d have a reasonable chance of hearing one after dark?

I’d also love to know about any other native species commonly seen around Auckland, Waitomo, Taupō, Rotorua, Matamata and Hamilton.

4. Winter weather & clothing
We know August is winter in New Zealand, but how cold does it actually feel in the places we’re visiting?

We’ll be bringing warm jackets, thermals, beanies and good walking shoes, but we’re curious whether there’s anything else you’d recommend packing.

Are there any locations on our itinerary that tend to feel noticeably colder than others, particularly in the mornings or evenings?

5. Photography & scenic viewpoints
I really enjoy photographing wildlife and landscapes.
Are there any scenic lookouts, hidden viewpoints or photography spots near our itinerary that aren’t as well known to visitors?

I’d especially love recommendations for sunrise, sunset, misty mornings or beautiful viewpoints if they’re easy to access.

6. Anything that catches visitors by surprise
Is there anything that commonly catches Australian visitors out when travelling around the North Island?

Whether it’s driving, weather, local etiquette, road conditions, parking, wildlife or something completely unexpected—we’d love to know before we arrive!

7. Mobile reception
How is mobile reception generally around Waitomo, Taupō, Rotorua and between those destinations?

Are there any stretches of road where it’s completely normal to lose signal?

8. Fuel
What’s the current average price for regular unleaded petrol?

Are there any areas where fuel tends to be noticeably more expensive than elsewhere?

Current itinerary:

Day 1 – Auckland
• Arrive late afternoon
• Collect hire car
• Stay in Auckland CBD
• Maungawhau / Mount Eden (time permitting)

Day 2 – Waitomo - My actual 40th Birthday!🎂 🎁
• Drive from Auckland
• Waitomo Caves
• Black Labyrinth Experience

Day 3 – Taupō
• Tiua Sailing Experience
• Huka Falls
• Craters of the Moon

Day 4 – Rotorua
• Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
• Whakarewarewa – The Living Māori Village
• Redwoods Treewalk, Nightlights & Glowworms

Day 5 – Rotorua
• Hell’s Gate Experience

Day 6 – Matamata
• Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour

Day 7 – Auckland

Day 8

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!
We’re really looking forward to finally experiencing the North Island together and would love to hear any local knowledge, favourite places or memorable experiences that could make the trip even more special.

Hopefully we’ll be lucky enough to hear a ruru while we’re there!
