Career change in 30s - fresh start suggestions.

32F in Perth (NOR) looking for some career ideas after being made redundant from a long-term marketing/design role.

I’ve spent 10+ years in digital marketing, graphic design, websites, CRM systems etc, but I’m not convinced traditional marketing is where I want to stay long term given AI and how saturated it’s become.

Note, I have no qualifications and it was all learnt on the job. I’d be happy doing a 6 month tafe course FT.

I’m open to entry-level roles, traineeships or industries that provide training. I’d rather take a lower salary to build a stable career in something I genuinely enjoy and can grow in over the years. I’m not a job hopper and have preference finding a place to stay long term.

Things I enjoy:
Creating/designing/building things
Problem solving with clear outcomes
Working independently with some variety
A mix of desk work and being out and about (but not constant travel if it means finishing up at 5pm in a suburb an hour away from home)
Structured, Monday-Friday environments
Early starts and early finishes (6am/7am starts)
Would love WFH (even 1 day a week) but understand it’s not as common as it once was

Things I’d prefer to avoid:
Heavy cold calling or phone-based customer service
Medical or legal fields
Long commutes south of the river

I’m based NOR, so ideally looking at Yanchep, Neerabup, Joondalup, Wangara, Osborne Park, Perth CBD (no further) and surrounding areas.

What careers, industries or specific job titles would you suggest that I might not have considered? Keen to hear from people who’ve made a similar pivot or started fresh in their 30s.

Transition for long term wfh to in office

Any advice for adjusting from WFH 5 days a week, to being in the office 5 days a week?

I’ve done wfh the past 6 years, had a year or so of coming in 1 day a week which was fine as I did 6am - 2pm. I’ve started a new gig as I was made redundant (role outsourced), and it’s 8am-4pm every day in the office. Government role, apparently landed myself in the few inflexible ones who are strict on office attendance and hours.

Had my first day today and I’m so overwhelmed. New industry, new routine, pure stress lol. I think I’m more overwhelmed at the commute and loss of wfh, losing the flexibility of appointments, chores done during lunch, just dead time. Got home after 5pm today and it feels like the day was already over, and now I need to do that 4 more days before I get 2 days to breathe and repeat. I’m refusing to go to sleep because I don’t want the day to end yet.

I know I’ve had it so good the past 6 years and office / those hours are the norm, but I want to be successful in this transition and hoping those who have gone through it have some tips and advice? Hopefully I don’t sound like a little brat, I completely acknowledge I’m being soft on what most people do daily.

Thanks

Ex employer not paying fair work conciliation payout - next steps?

I had a fair work conciliation for unfair dismissal and won. The employer however has not paid the amount owing. All is in writing and have a signed settlement agreement. What are my next steps? Is there free legal advice I can seek for this or do I go straight to small claims court? Fairwork won’t help, they’ve advised they have no obligations after the conciliation meeting has concluded.

Thanks!

How well do they train/onboard you?

I’m looking at moving out of my current industry (design and marketing) and looking at lower entry level admin/support/project roles, utilising transferable skills.

Curious on how training and on boarding works, is it thorough and genuinely does help? Hopeful if I could attempt applying for some level 3 jobs too but would need initial guidance after reading some JDFs.

My old company had zero onboarding, basically here’s your laptop. Good luck. So that’s what I’m used to seeing
