My head canon is they were seconded to the Deathwatch, picked up some gear and aesthetic choices from other chapter Veterans, then returned to the Ultramarines 1st Company, without dying. In reality, I’ve just changed my mind a few times what chapter I landed on since I started the models two years ago. Put tons of effort into them, including my first power swords glow.
