Latex and Foam Expert: AMA

I’ve done a few of these in the past but thought I would do a more focused AMA regarding mattress components, specifically natural foam rubber latex and Polyurethane foam, including viscoelastic memory foam.

I spent 12 years with the two largest PU foam manufacturers in the US and another 10 as a manufacturers rep for multiple Dunlop suppliers and a Talalay supplier. I’ve also represented spring manufacturers, steel wire suppliers and ticking/FR manufacturers along the way, so I’m happy to chime in on those as well.

Transparently; I still currently represent my latex partners in the market and I also own and operate a luxury sleep boutique.

I’ll happily answer any questions about mattress components and constructions. I’m not here to recommend specific brands or models. But rather to help provide general guidelines that you can use while looking for the right mattress. If you would like to provide me the specs of a model, I’ll give you my insight into whether I think it can serve you well based on your body type and sleep style.

Please know, that nothing replaces the value of going to an independent store and being fitted by an expert and comparing different models.

This subreddit breaks my heart and I’m tired of staying silent

I’ve been on and off this sub for month now. I come on to see what trends I can find that might help me to better serve my clients in my luxury mattress store that I operate but I often leave feeling so sorry for so many of you that are struggling to find the right mattress. It’s heart breaking.

But there are a few recurring themes that I see on this sub that frustrate me as 20+ year mattress industry professional. And I’m going to express a few of those thoughts in hopes that it may help a few people get out of the HELL that online research and this sub can cause. I know there will be some who disagree with me. If you do so respectfully, I will engage with you respectfully. My opinions on these matters is based on my personal experience as a component supplier and now a retailer to the mattress industry over 20 years.

  1. The Only Way to Truly Know if a Mattress is Right is to go to a store to experience and compare.

  2. Getting a quality mattress that is going to offer lasting support and comfort for less than $1000 is an unrealistic expectation.

3. 80% of the mattress brands that are discussed in this sub are owned and manufactured by 2 companies. Somnigroup (Tempurpedic) and 3Z. (It’s why all the mattresses look and feel the same online and in all the stores and why most people are so confused)

4. The main reason you see memory foam in so many mattress constructions is because Tempurpedic and 3Z are foam manufacturers. It’s the most cost efficient way to make mattresses.

5. I help a lot of people who chronically wake up sore and achey. 100% of the time, the culprit is that their mattress is too soft due to too much memory foam.

6. Mattress Firm is a closed loop. It’s owned by Somnigroup/Tempurpedic. They own almost all the brands on their floor. It’s an illusion of choice. They’re really just selling you the same components repackaged as different brands. Tempur, Stearns, Sealy, Sherwood, Kingsdown and they will soon own Purple (they’re already the manufacturer)

7. Natural mattress components like latex, cotton, wool and other fibers are FAR superior to synthetics like polyurethane foam and polyester.

8. You cannot DIY your way to a luxury mattress. You’re just stacking materials together.

9. The only brands you’ve heard of are brands that pay millions of dollars in marketing for you to find them. (And yes they are planting marketing propaganda on this very sub)

10. The best mattress manufacturers (and there are several) are ones you’ve probably never heard of.

I could go on but I’m gonna leave it there for now. You’re welcome to ask me questions or leave your own comments.

Luxury Sleep Expert : AMA

I had some fun helping out a few people some months ago and so thought I would try this again. I’ve worked in the mattress industry for over 22 years, primarily as a component supplier to all the major mattress brands. Been in just about every factory in the country and sold just about anything that’s ever been put in a mattress.

I currently own a private luxury sleep boutique where I custom fit guests for luxury sleep systems.

I’d be happy to answer any questions about mattress components, construction, accessories, retail operations or even just sleep (I’m also a certified sleep coach). My expertise is in higher-end brands and components so if you’re looking to ask the “best mattress under $1000” question, I’m not your guy and I don’t care to engage with the “just go to Costco” people.

I’m not here to bash or promote specific brands, but I will give you my honest take on what I see and hear from guests day in and day out as well as from what I know in working behind the scenes in the mattress industry.

All that being said, fire away!
