Medical Support Officer
Hi everyone, just looking to have a few questions answered by people with some experience.
I’ve just completed a paramedic science degree in the UK and the job opportunities are almost non-existent. So I’ve been considering alternative careers and joining the RAF. However, I have some concerns and just want some guidance and advice, so any help would be appreciated.
Would the Medical Support Officer role be the most appropriate for a newly qualified paramedic? I’m 30 years old with no previous experience in the armed forces. I will be a registered paramedic, am I going to be starting from the beginning again?
The minimum time served in this role is 12 years. Seems like a big commitment, why 12 years?
Realistically, how often am I going to be away from home. I live with my partner and I just assume I’ll have to abandon home for a while to start with and a good few months a year. Do you have a choice in where you’re based or just told when and where you eat, sleep and cry?
What is the job like? Is it enjoyable or just eating shit from superiors.
How easy it the process or signing up? I’m not an idiot but the mock aptitude test they have online shook me a little.
I’m aware I’m on the older side and not a young 18 year old they can shape as easily. Is that a disadvantage or does like experience help?
Is it a good career with opportunities to grow and develop?
Thanks in advance.
