Do you stop saving so aggressively once you buy a house?

I understand a large portion of my what someone used to save will now be going towards the mortgage and potentially additional housing costs, but did anyone take their foot off the gas so to speak?

For context, my house is due to complete construction in next few months. Location is pretty good, 35 mins from CBD. Mortgage approx 260k. I’m a single guy, $95k salary. It’s a modest house but I really have no desire to ever upgrade.

I’m just over living on barely anything week to week. Now that I’ve finally got what I worked so hard for, I feel like throwing some of those financial rules I lived by out the window. I’m 30 and don’t want to spend what young years I have left scraping by just to pay the mortgage off a little sooner…

I don’t know if there’s much of a question here, I guess asking for other people’s experiences or opinions.

How many young ones are actually saving towards a house?

To preface, I’m late 20s and have dedicated the last 7 years to finally buy a place. I’m not sure if it was worth it but what’s done is done.

I’ve noticed a good percentage of young people don’t have the same goals. For example, someone I met on the weekend through a mutual friend was complaining about the cost of housing (valid, our generation has been screwed with the cost to own a home), however they work part time at a cafe and sink beers most weekends.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but even 20 years ago, if you were single and working 20 hours a week, surely buying a house was still not possible?

I mainly stick to my own circles so just looking for some experiences or thoughts on it all. If someone can throw some data/stats my way, even better.

Are building inspectors during construction worthwhile?

As title says. Slab to be poured next month so early stages.

FHB, building a house alone so money is little tight. Given I’ll probably live in this house for 20 years+ (im not paying 50k stamp duty + transfer costs etc for a bigger house), I’m thinking I should at least make sure the house starts off on the right foot with no major underlying issues.

18th St Hot Pot

Does anyone know a recipe for a broth similiar to 18th St? I’ve tried a few hot pots around Adelaide and nothing compares. I don’t even care about sodium intake.

To rent a room out or not?

I’m 30, single. I built a 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 garage home. It’s a small, skinny home on a narrow block but I love it.

I’m receiving a bit of pressure from friends and family that I’m crazy if I don’t rent a room out for the extra cash. I understand it’s a great financial decision if I did this. I could really smash down the mortgage especially early on with the compounding.

For context, my salary is 94k and my mortgage is about 250k. I’ve absolutely slogged it out the last 10 years to get to this position.

The financially savvy person inside me knows how much the extra cash could pay off in the long run, but at the same time, no house mate, even a friend is going to treat my house with the same care as I am or probably expect. And secondly, I’ve worked so hard to get here, I just want to enjoy my privacy, explore relationships without a housemate hanging around, just enjoy myself.

Is anyone else in a similar position and justify living alone? Or has anyone decided to rent a room out in their house and it’s ended in disaster?

Mobile Phone Detection Camera Question

Can someone reassure me I’m over thinking this.

Tonight I had my phone in my pocket - completely concealed by pocket and not using it. I had one hand resting over the outside of my pocket going under the camera.

I know they updated the law (in SA at least) so you can have it in a pocket. However it probably looked like I was holding said object in my pocket or at least resting over it, surely that’s not a fine right?

It could have been literally anything in my pocket, a wallet, pocket book, etc. No part of the phone was visible, maybe just an outline of a rectangular shape I guess.

I could’ve been rearranging clothing, scratching, anything. Honestly maybe I wasn’t even doing it under the camera.

Thanks in advance from an overly anxious person.

If I receive something in the mail, I’ll post it lol
