USD 4.3Mn Net Worth. Mid 40s NRI. Planning to move back to India but want to minimize tax on Investments
Few key things for consideration
- Equity portfolio (90% in Indian stocks) finally reached USD 1Mn mark. Took longer than expected with market being flat and rupee depreciating.
- Want to atleast double equity porfolio in the next 12 months equal parts by deploying cash from 1. Income 2. FD 3. Cash in Hand
- Property portfolio entirely in India and largely in land which has appreciated well over the last 5 years. Not planning to touch it or add to it.
- Annual Income around USD 400k + bonus roughly USD 150k. Live in a no-tax country and so no tax being paid so far.
- Planning to move back to India for being a bit closer with parents and for kids' education.
- Current company may offer flexible working (they know I am a workoholic and work all time anyway). I may have to spend a week every month onsite but that is manageable. Problem is I will be come tax-eligble in India.
- Monthly spend in India would be 4-5lakhs all inclusive including foreign trips
- Kids have 4 and 8 years left in school before they go to college
Questions
- How close or far am I from actual Fatfire?
- I actually don't want to retire but want to work in my terms and less stress. Current company may offer that flexibility but tax become an issue. Also it may not be sustainable for ever as things change.
- If I move to India in 12 months, I believe moving to equity is probably best strategy as the tax is the same for both NRIs and Residents.
- Money in FCNR or FD which is currently tax free will all be taxable and bring more complexity. Given that not sure if I should use this leveraged FCNR play
- How do I maintain an investment portfolio outside India in USD without being taxed. Need this for hedging currency bets, diversification and for kids education later.
