Rubin Ultra allegedly delayed to 2028

I'm not expert, but this has to be kinda good.

Manufacturing problems = delays in scaling = delayed purchases = infrastructure spending slows = the circle jerk slows = ...selloffs start?

Maybe I'm being too optimistic. Thoughts??

Two figures with fading cultural influence can’t make AI cool

I get that this may be old news by now... but I didn't see any celebrations happen in this sub, and I think we deserve to enjoy even the small wins.

---

First of all, whoever said “Meta glasses are cyber trucks for the face” has a place in my heart forever lol.

---

Next, it's truly wild there was actually a moment in time where Mark confidently thought to himself:

"I'll bring back something people hated, add ai to it, and ta-da people will love it! This is the right moment, and I'm the guy that will make this cool. Me, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg. I will make something cool."

That's an insanely delusional thought to begin with. But then at some point, it was followed by:

"I'm gonna find a fading 2010s celebrity, known for being unrelatable to the average person, and openly pay them millions to make these seem even cooler!"

(because everybody knows that cultural relevance is spawned by endorsement deals between boring billionaires)

---

Finally, wtf is wrong with him? He's stone cold sober, and apparently doesn't even drink coffee. How does his mind sustain this level of delusion?? Is there truly no one being honest with him? Is it some kind of tech lord messiah complex?

Anyone else encountering this kind of lunacy?

Find this quite disturbing and am wondering how common it is, as I haven't personally experienced it yet. Contracting (vs FT) at the moment, so maybe that's why? This week 3 different friends (with very different roles / teams / industries / locations) have shared the following with me:

  • Being told (in initial onboarding after starting a new job) to share with the group why they love AI + how they used it during onboarding.
  • Being proactively told as a group (without provocation or incident) that they're not allowed to speak critically about AI.
  • Being asked in their review if they like AI and if they use it (while having it heavily implied that they will get denied a raise if they say 'no').

I knew the media hype was crazy of course, and that the tools have been heavily pushed inside of teams... but I'm kind of shocked at how blatantly it's being forced in into just the day-to-day narrative.

They're just handing people scripts now, and telling them to act them out or face consequences... da fuck?? That's coercion and intimidation, is it not? This is straight up crazy. Coo coo bananas nuts.

Is this happening on your teams??

-------

UPDATE:

A fourth person (in an entirely different role / company / location) just told me their leadership called everyone together to tell them they'd be fired if they weren't "100% on board with AI".

Never been more convinced the CEOs are all in the same private leadership group somewhere, because they all seem to be reading from the exact same script.

Truth bombs on the Tech Report

Particularly satisfying Ed truth bombs, for anyone who has ever been at the mercy of corporate theatrics and/or detests business idiots. From around @ 18:00-24:00 is the most satisfying bit to me.

It's funny how just hearing the truth something, feels like an actual antidote to poison.

Data Centre not moving ahead due to 'not much benefit to the economy' + environmental impact

This man just out here like "nah, don't bother us again unless you're interested in a thoughtful human centered approach to technology."

I reject the idea that we have to be slaves to surveillance capitalism, in order to participate in the modern economy.

Sir.. WHAT TF DID YOU JUST SAY??!!😍

This makes me so happy. Everything he said is so... rational. Massive shout out also to Christie Little who started the petition.

Such great news to end the day with!

College student "disappears" after family argument about ChatGPT's environmental impact

Well, add this to the string of weird ChatGPT stories I guess.

Sounds like Weston cares about the environment quite a bit, and maybe deliberately disappeared to start fresh (Jouhatsu?).

While this is quite sad and probably didn't need to happen, I'm low key proud of him for the sticking to his values in communicating the harms.

Thoughts on the 'non-ai' human led angle of work to come

Do you all think it'll become an advantage at some point for certain types of teams/services to market themselves as 'human led' with zero (or very minimal) use of ai? If so, what type of teams/services might be most successful with that, and why?

I thinnnk this might be inevitable (if it hasn't already started) as ai becomes more obviously unreliable. However, maybe I'm too biased (and/or informed) to be correct. Keep in mind the very loud narrative that 'ai will get better', and also the fact that it won't. There's also people who hate it either way, and some of us who know slop actually causes rework.

What do you all think?

Appetite related synesthesia question...

^(Just found this sub today, and very excited! Hi all : D)

Ok, so I've known for a long time that I have a couple types of synesthesia:

  1. Numbers and letters (sometimes full words) always have their own colours.
  2. Some music triggers specific shapes and colours.

But one thing I've occasionally wondered about is if/how synesthesia might be affecting my appetite. And I'm really really curious to know if anyone can relate to what I'm about to describe. So, here's what happens...

I can be eating my favourite food, really enjoying it, and quite hungry at the time. But even in those circumstances, it's extremely easy for me to suddenly lose my appetite if I hear certain things. And they're really random things like:

• someone saying a specific word, like 'compost'
• people arguing in a sitcom
• hearing mention of a violent act in a podcast
• hearing even just an ad about medical conditions

It's really annoying but it feels like it somehow takes over my imagination or something, and completely ruins the food. Almost as if I'm eating something foul.

Does ANYBODY know what I'm talking about?

^(Yes, this article is paywalled.)

Is it just me, or does it seem weird and unnecessary to create separate new companies just for this? Maybe I'm missing something fundamental, or being overly suspicious... but on the surface this feels like a thinly veiled attempt to detach themselves from building costs and look prettier ahead of IPO.

Also, "forward-deployed engineers" being aggressively recruited to accelerate adoption?? Nooooo😩

How does this dumb ass initiative seem to keeping growing two new heads each time one is chopped off? How many ways are there to keep re-animating this corpse? I'm so bored of it and ready for it to die off already.

Started to notice a pattern around who swallows this bait the hardest, and then yaps the most about how much better life is since they've surrendered to their captor embraced 'ai'. They always gush about it is as though someone is holding a gun to their head and they're desperately trying to sound excited.

I'm not super young, but I'll just say I'm talking people quite a bit older than me who are still in the work force. Something about seeing them so scared and compliant has made me realize (on a whole new level) how predatory and sinister that whole narrative is.

Obviously anyone at any age can fall for it, but something about witnessing older people fall for it breaks my heart. Also just reminds me how many people (of all ages) are living with immense stress and despair EVERY DAY because of this dumbassery.

This sh*t really can't come to an end fast enough.

Sidebar:

Discovered and joined this sub around the same time I started a several week long Monday night grief group (which ended tonight). It's been a great way to shift vibes on Monday nights on the way home, so I wanted to say a quick thanks to whoever sees this. Thank you guys for creating what feels like an actual online community + source of sanity, camaraderie, and much needed comic relief.
