Salt & Straw The Summer Pies Series

Salt & Straw The Summer Pies Series

Wild-Foraged Berry Slab Pie

Our take on berry pie à la mode brings back a mountain of foraged fruit and loyal fans every year. Mounds of wild mountain blackberries, blueberries, and lingonberries—handpicked by our friend “Bear” on the slopes of Mt. Baker in Washington—slowly simmer into an ooey-gooey filling. That syrupy compote gets slathered on thick over flaky, double-baked pie crust, then folded into salted vanilla ice cream. One bite and you’ll understand why we couldn’t make the Summer Pies Series without it.

Wildflower Honey and Lemon Chess Pie

Every Southern state puts its own spin on Chess Pie—this is ours. Intensely creamy cultured frozen yogurt is sweetened with wildflower honey from Bee Local, lending a mild, chamomile-like floral note to the tangy, rich flavor. Ricotta, vanilla, honey, and lemon come together as a custard, poured and baked into a shortbread crust from Grand Central Bakery until the center sets with that signature jelly-like wobble. Pops of fresh, citrusy pie punctuate every scoop, finished with a drizzle of tart, housemade lemon curd. Pucker up! This pie’s got zing.

Gruyère and Tomato Custard Tart

A savory ‘slice’ in our spread of summer pies. Juicy tomato jam marbles through a silky Gruyère cheese filling, baked into the buttery, flaky pie crust we adore from Grand Central Bakery. Once it’s bubbling and golden, we dice the tart into cheesy, bite-sized morsels and toss them into a smooth salt & pepper custard ice cream. The warm, fruity heat of aranya pepper pairs beautifully with the tomato’s natural sweetness. Consider it a light lunch in disguise.

Peaches and Cream Galette

Few fruits say summer quite like ripe stone fruit. And few desserts capture their juicy magic better than a peach galette—handmade, rustically imperfect, and all the more delicious for it. We bake ripe peaches, butter, and sugar to bubbly perfection inside a crumbly honey shortbread crust, then fold generous hunks of tender peach galette right into our vibrant fresh peach ice cream. To finish, we swirl in even more ooey gooey peach pie filling made with peak-season Oregon fruit. It’s peaches three ways. And somehow, still not enough.

Coconut Cherry Pie with Almond Crust (v)

Our all-American Sour Cherry Pie gets a rich, creamy vegan update. Tart cherries from Washington orchards reduce with a generous pour of amaretto into a glossy, ruby-red filling. A crumbly shortbread crust echoes the delicate almond notes, subtly amplifying the cherry flavor—a move pastry chefs swear by. Everything’s folded into lush coconut cream for a nutty, tangy, and totally dairy-free scoop of cherry pie.

Blue Bell Chocolate Lava Cake: Quick Review

Overall this is pretty simple but better well executed than their recent simple options like the Brookie Ala Mode. The first thing I noticed was that the calorie count per serving was much higher at 300 than anything I remember from Blue Bell. I checked the pint of Oatmeal Cream Pie I have and that was only 260.

Not the greatest pictures but the pint was stacked topped to bottom with large cake pieces the sauce and swirl. The way it was packed really gave it that feel of ordering a chocolate lava cake with a scoop of vanilla on top. I saw some complaints about using vanilla as the base but it plays its role well.

This isn’t mind blowing but it’s executed well. If it’s in your area picking up a pint is advised.

Jeni's Frosted Sugar Cookie Ice Cream: Quick Review

Flavor Description:

Buttery sugar cookies sweet cream with soft, cake-like cookies and pink cream cheese frosting.

Overall Thoughts:
I thought this was well executed relative to the flavor description and to some degree the Lofthouse cookie concept. Big picture I just wast a fan. Something about the base relative to the frosting just didn’t hit quite right for me. I would also say my frosting was lacking overall. I don’t think I will pick this up again but it’s not a miss for the brand to me.

McConnell's Fine Ice Creams x See's Candies Quick Review: See’s Candies Brown Sugar with Milk Bordeaux

See’s iconic Milk Bordeaux. Creamy brown sugar enrobed in rich milk chocolate, and covered in sprinkles. Churned into McC’s brown sugar-infused sweet cream and loaded-up with swirls of salted caramel and even more See’s chocolate sprinkles.

This is going to be simple because not a whole lot needs to be said. This is damn good, if you don’t pick this up from WF during the July 4th sale then you have made a mistake.

Salt & Straw Chef Series 2026

Cheesecake with Salted Yuzu Curd

At his Seattle restaurant Tomo, Brady Ishiwata Williams lets his Japanese American heritage inspire him, blending authentic flavors and Pacific Northwest ingredients into something deliciously personal. Here, we fold tender hunks of his airy, vanilla bean Japanese soufflé cheesecake into our signature salted vanilla. We then layer in the distinctive citrus note of yuzu two ways: a ripple of tangy yuzu curd and melt-in-your-mouth shards of yuzu white chocolate stracciatella. Rich, balanced, and easy to savor spoon after glorious spoon.

Hong Kong Milk Tea with Toasted White Chocolate

A familiar face on cooking shows, and the mind behind beloved LA restaurants Nightshade and Daybird, Chef Mei Lin has built a reputation for bold, layered recipes rooted in Chinese flavors. Her take on a Hong Kong favorite steeps salted vanilla and black tea into a bittersweet, aromatic brew. Swirled with custardy condensed milk and finished with toasted white chocolate and feuilletine crumbles for a tender, buttery crunch—it’s a comforting classic taken to the next level.

Chocolate Caramel Smoked Budino

Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi are the chefs behind two of Miami's hottest restaurants: Boia De and Walrus Rodeo. Their scoop? A take on their chocolate budino (Italian for pudding) that just might be the most decadent ice cream we’ve ever crafted. Velvety chocolate olive oil custard blends Valhrona couverture and cocoa powder for double-chocolate intensity. Caramel candied hazelnuts (toasted to a bittersweet, almost smoky depth in a nod to their wood-fired flavors) and a sea salt caramel drizzle finish things off for a taste that lingers long after you’ve savored the last spoonful.

Starling Sweet Potato Buckwheat Crumble

From Dan Barber, iconic chef of Blue Hill at Stone Barns and co-founder of Row 7, this flavor celebrates the Starling purple sweet potato, a new Row 7 variety developed for exceptional flavor. This stunningly purple potato is steamed and whipped with sweet cream, sake lees (the slightly boozy, super flavorful byproduct of sake) and yogurty shio koji (a richly creamy rice sauce) into an earthy, almost ube-like ice cream full of fermented richness. We then drizzle in our Starling sweet potato swirl, cooked with a salty miso, before folding in a nutty buckwheat Florentine crumble.

Caramelized Plantain with Spicy Pecan Brittle (v)

Chef Gregory Gourdet’s, a deep connection to food and Haitian culture combine to form a complex, layered approach to flavor that is at the heart of this special scoop. First, brown sugar plantains are churned into ice cream, gently spiced with cinnamon, star anise, and lime zest. Caramelized plantains add soft pockets of chew, while habanero pecan brittle brings heat and a delightful sticky crunch. It all finishes with dense almond-plantain cake, adding a tender crumble that ties it all together in one rich and balanced bite.

Quick Review: Afters Strawberry Cookie Crunch

STRAWBERRY COOKIE CRUNCH
Your classic strawberry ice cream...but with chocolate chip cookies.

This one is just ok. I like the concept and the flavor profile but there isn’t enough punch in the base. It’s a decent enough quality ice cream at 260 calories per serving. This is only available via Dashmart in my area so prices are inflated. They have some solid flavor concepts so depending on price it might be a better overall experience if they retail price is good.

Ben & Jerry’s Honey Graham Latte: SnackForagers Review

Flavor Description:
Caramel Coffee Ice Cream with Honey Graham Cracker Swirls & Crunchy Cinnamon Swirls

My Recent Experience with B&J Limited Flavors:
These releases were really a chance to expect a banger from B&J but they seem to be less frequent and daring now. This by no means is cutting edge but outside the Graham Swirls it doesn’t cover the usually brownie, cookie dough, fudge flakes territory many of us have grown tired of.

The Experience:
I have to admit this was pretty dang good. Good coffee base with the right balance of sweetness. I got a decent about of the swirls but it wasn’t possible to distinguish them. I never felt they tasted like crunchy cinnamon. It’s possible those were overpowered by the base. The Honey Graham Swirls did seem to have to a little punch of sweetness compared to the standard version.

The Verdict:
Overall I think this was a win. It was better excited than the most recent exclusive flavor (to my memory) Fudgy Flan. To be fair my bar these days for B&J is lower these days so I wouldn’t say it’s a top class flavor but it’s worth a pickup if it’s stocked near you. With the influx of availability and flavors from other brands I won’t circle back to this again but it was a good scoop.
