Why You Should Visit Cuba in 2026

I lived in Cube from 2018-2020 but hadn't returned until December. This begins a 10 day series around the island, including when they had a nation wide black out.

New-ish Local Spot in Old Havana changes as the day goes on

I've seen some questions about LGBTQ+ friendly spots and wanted to share this one that is inclusive.

Cafe Ateneo is just off Prado and is pretty much locals only at the moment. I stopped in during the day when it's a cafe, food is great and reasonably priced.

From 6-10pm they are more of a place to have some drinks. At night it is a club with live music, drag shows and other events.

They are quite active on social media as ateneo_de_la_habana and AteneoPDL on Facebook.

I wanted to leave photos but it looks like Gallery posts aren't allowed here.

While the theatre is in restoration you can get a tour for 600 CUP which is insanely good if you're getting the El Toque rate.

My guide Lazaro spoke English and took us behind the scenes of the theatre. I learned so much about the theatre, the Galicians, Cuba's economy and of course Alicia Alonso.

At the end you go up to the roof for the best views.

It is only possible during restoration and was an amazing tour. We tipped $10 in USD.

Is there any way at all to reach them by email? My insurance company won't process a claim until we get a paper from them and we're no longer there. I really don't want to fly there just for a paper.

I am always surprised at how often Santa Marta is overlooked in tourism. It doesn't have the chaos and scams of Cartagena and far more beauty and natural attractions. And its food and green banana specialty are unique.

What other cities do you think are under the radar for tourism?
