Rewatching ep 5

Rewatching ep 5

I was rewatching s1ep5 and good lord what an awesome episode it is. Alex's expression of Spencer why are we in this thing that shouldn't leave the harbor, and Helen Mirren's roller coaster of emotions up down up down to the side wiiiii, and then that final scene with Whitfield... I always remember Timothy's 007 or him playing the role of a tyrant president of a tiny country and I'm like noooo why is he so mean in this show, why!

And we also learn the source of Spencer's scar, that for some reason I had forgotten (it was the ending of the show, it made me forgot half of everything bc I was too occupied crying)

Also, I love the ranch kitchen. I need that kitchen in my life. So spacious and comfortable 💕

I'm adding a pic of the next episode because look what it got you your hurry Spencer!! Why couldn't you wait three weeks!!! Like, it's not much in the great scheme of things...!! You could have been in NY by the end of December! Maybe traveling across the plains by early January!

Also, plot hole: we see Spencer and Alex trying to book passage, but the Franconia and the Mauretania are from a French liner, and in Mombasa there were also the British liners. He was in a hurry, why couldn't he book passage in a British ship! Anyway, I opt to think there wasn't any other ship but those two 😂

Kevin's John talking of his ancestors

So, he mentions his great-grandfather was around in 1889. That would be James, we all can agree on this. And then he mentions his grandfather. And I was wondering... if John considers James his great-grandfather... wouldn't that make Spencer his grandfather? Like, the line would be: son (John III), father (John II), grandpa (Spencer), great-grandfather (James). I mean, John II was almost 90 when he died.

I know, I'm clinging to TS' crumbs 🥲😂

Mirrors of each other

So, I was thinking (yes, it's me again with more thoughts that nobody asked me about) that Alex's journey to Montana mirrors Spencer's journey to Montana. While hers goes AWFULLY WRONG, and his goes ALSO WRONG, I couldn't stop noticing some paralelisms like Alex's SA, and Spencer's is witness to a man being SA. The difference: Spencer, a man, can do something, and getting out of it. Alex defends herself and is threatened and treated like a criminal.

Spencer encounters the Italian mafia, and has to work with criminals in order to get away and continue his journey; Alex is mugged by a criminal and loses all her valuables, almost missing her train too.

He's taken by the police but cleared by the county's sheriff and his outstanding valor in the war; she's arrested and saved only for the grace of a good hearted couple.

He gets a ticket for second class; she gets passage in a car bound to death.

He goes through shootings, and doens't lose a hair of his head; she meets the snow and decides to forbit her life in order to give her newborn some much needed warm-time with momma.

Summarizing it, and paraphrasing Spencer in ep 3 of s1: 'this was just them, taking a drive in the country' but separated. Together they always had a chance. I mean, what are the odds to be stranded at sea in a capsized boat but being saved???

As an addendum, TS highlights all the things a woman traveling alone can go through, while also showing that men did have it hard too when traveling without money (and depending enterily of his skills, like Spencer does. Another paralelism, see? Spencer can use his skills and get more or less away, Alex uses her skills and is meet with a wall of judging stares).

As per TS' usual endings, she dies (as someone pointed to me the other day in this sub reddit, this is a Western, and so we know the ending will be bittersweet if not outright sad), and he doesn't (but ends up being utterly miserable because his heart is underground). Incredibly, this also mirrors them.

So, anyone else thought of this too?

PS: marked this as a 18+ because of the mentions of SA.
